» Like hungry ants or rabid piranhas, the hordes of zombies in World War Z swarm and sprint and leap at their targets with biological ferocity, defying the George A. Romero rule about the walking dead being essentially lethargic. The sight of these terrifying multitudes racing along streets or piling up like columns of wriggling maggots are some of the moneyed shots in a movie that views zombification as a health problem on a global scale. To fight the undead, syringes are more useful, apparently, than guns.

» We weep for the South. We send prayers and we will remember, or try our best to remember, all the deaths and not consign them to the faceless realm of statistics. » When Hussein cooks, the whole community rubs its stomach and rejoices. The Rohingya's kitchen repertoire of Burmese, Bangladeshi, Pakistani and northern Indian hybrids - it's hard to classify the origin of his menu of dry-fried ribs, complexly spiced curries, mutton biryani and other marvels - is a feast at Islamic functions and wedding ceremonies in a Bang Rak soi.

» All we want for Christmas is often something we can't get. World peace? Poverty eradication? That would make Santa sweat like a North Pole pig. No more violence, no more discrimination, no more settlements in the West Bank, no more brutality against the Rohingya, no more extremism, no more torture, no more drone attacks, no more school shootings, no more global warming, no more deportation of migrant workers, no more censorship, no more floods, earthquakes, tsunamis - wish for those and we're going to sound like John "Imagine" Lennon with flowers in his hair, though I believe Lennon was often right in general and wrong in some particulars.

» The Israelis like it hot. Hamas likes it hot. The "BB" lovebirds Boonchai and Bongkot, naturally, like it hot. The southern insurgents, painfully, like it hot. The 3G bidders like it hot. The British tabloids, fantasising about Barack Obama's flirtatious eyeing of our LOL prime minister, like it - or wish it - hot. The anti-Yingluck Facebook brigade, taking their cue from the tabloids and elevating the initial fantasy into a sexist smear campaign, like it hot. Marilyn Monroe, who liked it very hot way back in 1959, would be turning in her grave.
