Justice system fails nation

News, Editorial, Published on 11/04/2018

» Brazil has just imprisoned for corruption the most popular politician ever elected as the country's president. South Korea has just convicted and jailed the history-making first woman president in its history -- for corruption. Thais have every right to be impressed and depressed by these cases. Support the marine plan

News, Editorial, Published on 26/03/2018

» The government should immediately get behind, approve and regulate a plan unveiled last week to protect marine parks and life. The plan, produced by an environmental strategy group, requires an enforced ceiling on visitors to the country's 22 marine national parks. Not only is this project a chance to protect and preserve coral, beaches, fish and islands, but it's a prime opportunity across several departments and ministries to promote new technology and help move along the Thailand 4.0 effort.

South shows peace signs

News, Editorial, Published on 06/02/2018

» The orchestrated "surrender" of nearly 300 men in Pattani last week is getting a rough reaction from some critics. They label it either a sham that means nothing or a misguided amnesty to admitted terrorists. The critics are wrong and the commander of the 4th Army commander is right. The welcoming "Bring People Home" ceremony won't end the southern insurgency and isn't meant to immediately bring peace. It's a true indication of the extremely difficult tasks at hand.

The second of its kind, the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Summit involves the leaders of all six countries touched by the mighty Mekong. The prime agenda item is what Beijing calls The Five-Year Plan of Action, a Chinese-dictated guideline for "development" of the river. One of the prime minister's most important tasks will be careful monitoring of how this plan impacts Thais.

Communities have rights

News, Editorial, Published on 22/11/2017

» The campaign by residents of Phitsanulok for a proper investigation of the old Akara Resources gold mine is well taken. The request, filed directly to the prime minister, notes that their complaint is over two years old. No progress has been reported by the Department of Special Investigation (DSI). As compelling as this single case is, the Phitsanulok group is but a stark illustration of the military regime's poor or absent handling of community problems.
