» We start 2016 with the usual predictions about Apple: no innovation, low share prices (not as low as 2008) and estimates of falling iPhone sales as if that were it. We should have a better idea later this month with the quarterly financial figures. In the meantime, there are predictions that Apple will buy Tesla, with some analysts speculating on which companies Apple should buy. Some never learn.

» In the late 70s county forces in the UK were given access to the Police National Computer (PNC) when it came online. This allowed quicker checking for stolen cars or for criminals who were wanted.

» Apple announced its 2015 App Awards last week, and Periscope is the top iPhone app. There was also a local list and the top local iPhone app was Enlight. Simple Machines was the top app for the iPad. I have both and am not surprised they were award winners.

» Every time Apple releases a new product, some of the more excitable publications expect a magic bullet. Not even the iPhone was an instant success, with several commentators suggesting it would not sell and Apple would be doomed.

» Early last week, Apple announced that by Friday, the iPad Pro was to be available in some 40 countries, including Thailand. » Apple made a lot of money last quarter and is on for a record year. Those predicting lower sales in China were utterly wrong. Wall Street is ringing its hands because (they say) this sort of growth cannot be sustained and Apple will fail. I guess eventually, the Sun will stop shining too, but not yet. » Apple has just announced its 4th quarter results. These should be available in several online sources by now. Income will come from hardware such as iPhones and Macs, and services. Some sales figures, such as the Apple Watch, will all be included in an "Other" section.

» Next Tuesday, Oct 27, Apple will announce its fiscal 4th quarter earnings at 2pm Cupertino Time (5pm New York). That is 4am here on Wednesday (9pm GMT +7). After the announcements, there is always a question and answer session in which Tim Cook and Luca Maestri do their best to fend off questions about future products. I expect there will be questions about the Apple Car, which may or may not exist. There will be a live audio webcast of the event at investor.apple.com.

» Last Wednesday, not only was there the expected update to OS X, with El Capitan, but version 9.0.2 of iOS 9 was also released and my iOS devices were updated quickly. The first download of El Capitan for my MacBook Pro failed and I had to start again. I also downloaded an update for the MacBook. I left the downloads running and when I came back from lunch, they were ready to roll. I installed the new OS X on two machines at the same time and both were good.

» In a few hours time, Apple will announce several new products at its event at the Bill Graham Center in San Francisco. Although many commentators have already given us their authoritative ideas on what will be announced, only Apple knows.
