Nuclear proliferation cannot be bombed away

News, Mohamed ElBaradei, Published on 05/07/2025

» In 1966, the United States, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, France, and China not only were the only countries that possessed nuclear weapons; they also had enough wisdom to recognise the dangers posed by nuclear proliferation. Despite their many and deep political differences, they arrived at a consensus to halt the further dissemination of "nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices".

US strikes on Iran nuke plants risk backfiring

Oped, Brahma Chellaney, Published on 26/06/2025

» Israel and the United States have dealt punishing blows to Iran's nuclear infrastructure. "Operation Rising Lion" and "Operation Midnight Hammer" have been portrayed as precision strikes that will stop the Islamic Republic's nuclear programme in its tracks. Oped, Sippakorn Chongchuwanich, Published on 06/08/2020

» What we cannot prepare for, we must prevent. Nuclear weapons are among humanity's darkest and most inhumane arsenal of war. It is high time, then, 75 years after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, to look back and acknowledge the incalculable human impact of this dangerous instrument of destruction.

Denuclearisation also means the US

News, Jeffrey D Sachs, Published on 09/05/2018

» There are two types of foreign policy: one based on the principle "might makes right", and one based on the international rule of law. The United States wants to have it both ways: to hold other countries accountable to international law while exempting itself. And nowhere is this truer than on the matter of nuclear weapons.
