No more coal power plants needed

News, Danny Marks, Published on 06/07/2016

» Last Thursday, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat) confirmed that it will construct six new coal-fired power plants by 2025. On many levels, building these new power plants seems not to be a well thought-out plan.

What Thailand needs to learn from Brexit

News, Surin Pitsuwan, Published on 28/06/2016

» What happened on Thursday when the people of the UK voted to leave the European Union (EU) was equivalent to a political seismic movement and an economic tectonic catastrophe that will have far-reaching implications on the global community long into the future.

Precious lessons for protecting our nature

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 13/06/2016

» Last week, there was good and bad news about the environment. I learnt a lot about environmental protection measures during my June 6-7 visit to Japan's Yakushima Island, of which 20% of the total area is registered as a World Natural Heritage Site by Unesco. Later on June 9, I was happy to hear that various groups of people planted trees on some parts of deforested land in Nan and many other Thais planted trees elsewhere and also at home.

The voices of the people are under siege

News, Anchalee Kongrut, Published on 04/04/2016

» Taweesak In-gwang is a resident of Chiang Rak Yai district in Pathum Thani province. Lamom Boonyong is a fisherman in Rayong. Though a couple of hundred kilometres apart, they have one thing in common. They are branded "mafia" by the government because they dare to speak out against state development projects that will affect their environment and livelihoods.

Megaprojects provide stimulus and long-term gains

News, Sutapa Amornvivat, Published on 17/02/2016

» The volatility in global financial markets has recently picked up again on the back of a series of mediocre economic data across the globe. Poor results for Thai exports in 2015 could very well extend further, putting a spotlight on the need for public investment more than ever. Without a doubt, the cabinet will be called upon to churn out the public infrastructure projects as promised.

A tech deal that delivers

News, Editorial, Published on 21/12/2015

» The world's slowest negotiations have finally concluded with the signing of a deal to eliminate most trade tariffs on technology hardware. The World Trade Organisation (WTO) last week reached an agreement with 53 countries, and among the signatories is Thailand. The deal affects an estimated US$1.3 trillion in annual trade in a substantial variety of IT products. It will spur trade and development of technology in many areas, from home and office to futurist research laboratories.

Govt needs to plan for long-term growth

News, Pavida Pananond, Published on 13/10/2015

» Thailand's economic growth forecast has been on a slippery slope. From official estimates early this year of upwards of 4%, the World Bank's latest projection now pegs economic expansion at just above 2%. This steady descent is underpinned by a global economic slowdown, especially in China. More disconcerting, it also points to Thailand's fuzzy politics and structural shortcomings that only clear policy direction with measured political predictability can address.

Gateway plan erodes trust

News, Editorial, Published on 06/10/2015

» The reason why the government has such a huge credibility problem over its plans to establish a one-gateway internet system is its refusal to come clean. From the moment the new internet plan became public, authorities have tried to spin the plan instead of portray it honestly. This is despite the fact that cabinet directives have made it clear it is a security proposal.

Capitalism not a cause of poverty

News, Ricardo Hausmann, Published on 24/08/2015

» Capitalism gets blamed for many things nowadays: poverty, inequality, unemployment, even global warming. As Pope Francis said in a recent speech in Bolivia: "This system is by now intolerable: farm workers find it intolerable, labourers find it intolerable, communities find it intolerable, peoples find it intolerable. The earth itself -- our sister, Mother Earth, as Saint Francis would say -- also finds it intolerable."

Chinese will get trains up and running

News, Saritdet Marukatat, Published on 06/07/2015

» China always thinks big. That is the way it is for a country that ranks number two in the global economy pecking order, with its vast amounts of cash to splash about.
