News, Editorial, Published on 08/01/2019

» Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha rather curtly ordered tens of thousands of students to continue waiting but the young people have a point about their examination dates. The many identities of the Statue of Liberty

News, Published on 17/11/2018

» The Statue of Liberty's creator, the Alsatian artist Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi, grew up in a world apart from the "huddled masses" who arrived in the New World, sailing toward her beacon. Born in 1834, into a rich and prestigious family in Colmar in northeastern France, his ancestors were doctors, pharmacists and bureaucrats who never felt the need to leave their homeland in search of opportunity. And yet, he managed to capture something ineffable about the America he visited in 1871, which -- along with its placement -- has made his statue an enduring symbol.

Hope, history are out of tune in Tiananmen Square

News, Philip J Cunningham, Published on 04/06/2018

» When hope and history are out of tune, what is there to do but wait? The tyranny of our decimal number system and ingrained media habits have as much to do with the thundering silence about the June 4 anniversary this year as the tyranny of China's ruling party and propaganda apparatus. Anniversaries generate more sympathetic vibrations in even-numbered years than odd, and decades carry a resounding clout of their own, at least in media terms, so it's unlikely much news will be made of the 29th earthly orbit since the tanks stormed into Tiananmen Square.

DLT must look at big picture

News, Editorial, Published on 05/04/2018

» In a desperate bid to regulate passenger van operations, the state last year launched a series of measures to make them safer. The goal of getting this extremely popular service in order as part of the regime's "return happiness to the people" policy was laudable. But the implementation, using a centralised, top-down bureaucratic style, has been riddled with errors. Some measures have simply missed the point.

Urban hiking in Bangkok ain't a bad idea after all

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 19/03/2018

» Have you ever been in a situation like this? You're at a BTS station, and as you approach the turnstile to catch your train, you realise there is not enough credit for the ride on your Rabbit card. The queues at the ticket booths are too long and you hate waiting.
