Prayutian Language

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 16/08/2019

» You can always count on dear Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha for unique phraseology that stimulates our brains in search of what the heck he truly means. Most recently, what he said spurred speculation that he may step down as prime minister for failing to complete an oath-taking, which his critics said could nullify the entire Prayut 2.0 Cabinet.

Happy Mother's Day

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 09/08/2019

» Dear Facebook mums, I've seen all of your cute posts regarding your children and motherhood. I just want to say thank you for reminding me how difficult it is to incubate a human being inside you for nine months and raise them afterwards. That's a lifelong commitment, which I have no intention to get myself into.

Memorable MPs

» The two-day policy announcement by the new government may leave you with mixed emotions, memes, analysis, amusing moments and trepidation of what's to come. Consider this a prelude of what we all can expect from the future assembly of our representatives, dear readers. Therefore, allow me to recap in gist, IMHO, the most memorable members of Parliament -- for better, worse or fun.

» We first interviewed Peerapat "Add" Wimolrungkarat because of his unique job as personal photographer for Abhisit Vejjajiva while he was the 27th prime minister of Thailand many moons ago. Since then Add has gone on to become the photo editor of The Momentum and The Standard news websites and since 2017, has worked as the photographer for Isra Sunthornvut, secretary-general of Asean Inter-Parliamentary Assembly. Recently he was chosen as a finalist in StreetFoto San Francisco 2019 Contest and his works, along with four Bangkok-based photographers, will be exhibited from June 3-9. Also a Leica ambassador since 2016, he is holding the “Sense Of Place” exhibition, which runs until Jun 16 at Leica Gallery Bangkok.

PM's Tracklist Vol. 3

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 24/05/2019

» PM Prayut Chan-o-cha released his latest single earlier this month after the royal coronation. Titled March Thai Keu Thai (Thai is Thai), the new song shows, as always, his prowess penmanship, despite its title, which seems a bit redundant.

Everyday is April Fools' Day

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 05/04/2019

» I know, April Fool's Day was on Monday. But don't you think that, given the current social media climate rife with fake news and false info, we're celebrating practical jokes and hoaxes every day? To celebrate hilarity caused by media illiteracy, here are some falsity that's recently floating in Thai internet that many unfortunately have taken to be authentic.

Crossword Puzzle: Thai PM Candidates Edition

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 22/02/2019

» As the March 24 election nears, the number of opinion polls have increased. On Sunday, one poll in particular caught my eyes. Super Poll announced the result of a survey, which I unofficially translate to "The Public’s Concern During Election Season". What made this poll stand out is that when they asked people about their specs for PM candidates, they use cryptic descriptions such as "Man in his 50s. Former leader of this country with high position" and "Man in his 40s. Former exec. A political activist." Instead of simply using their actual names like other polls? They did that to avoid violating any election rules, perhaps.

The lighter side of politics

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 30/03/2018

» Amid the deluge of headlines that pop up on my (and perhaps your) smartphone screen, a few manage to catch my attention with their unexpected funniness especially those regarding Thai politics. Some are so ironic, they are jokes. Not sure what I'm getting at? Here are a few examples for your entertainment. After reading too many corruption scandals involving state officials, one just needs a few laughs, y'know.

Don't let the black leopard die

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 16/03/2018

» In the wake of the scandal where Italian-Thai Development president and three men were caught allegedly poaching protected animals in a wildlife sanctuary, an outpour of artwork has been created to pressure the concerning authority to mete out due justice. This is understandable as many have little faith in Thai justice system given its track record of double standards. This week, I decided to highlight some of the pieces in hope that this case won't fade into oblivion anytime soon.

#watchgate

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 26/01/2018

» There is this ongoing "watchgate", which started in December when Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon, aka Uncle Pom, held up his hand to shield his face from sunlight during a photo shoot with his fellow ministers at Government House. What caught people's eyes was a Richard Mille watch on his wrist and a giant diamond on his ring finger.
