On reforming lese majeste

Voranai Vanijaka, Published on 24/04/2014

» In Joseph Stalin’s Soviet Union, brothers informing on brothers, families ratting out each other to state authorities, was encouraged. Then, off to the gulag with you.

Put your country first, before politics

Voranai Vanijaka, Published on 11/07/2013

» The controversial audio tape of what appears to be Deputy Defence Minister Yuthasak Sasiprapa and Thaksin Shinawatra engaging in a supposedly naughty conversation may be grabbing all the attention right now, but let’s not forget yesterday’s news, the rice pledging scheme, just because there’s a fresh, sexy headline.

Guy Fawkes and the red Goliath

Voranai Vanijaka, Published on 06/06/2013

» It’s rather interesting, this Guy Fawkes phenomenon that has sprung up among the Thai social network populace who oppose Thaksin Shinawatra and the Pheu Thai regime.

Cheating the cheaters

Voranai Vanijaka, Published on 30/05/2013

» Foreign workers are useful. They fill the jobs we don’t have the proper skills to do, or the jobs that we simply don’t want to do.

OPINION

A society in decay

Voranai Vanijaka, Published on 17/01/2013

» The greatest threat to Thailand is not from any foreign power. It is not the man in Dubai, nor is it the invisible hand. It is not the polarisation caused by the political divide, nor is it even the corruption.

The legal licence to kill

News, Voranai Vanijaka, Published on 16/12/2012

» If we were to view the charges against former prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and former national security chief Suthep Thaugsuban relating to the death of an innocent bystander during the political crisis of April and May 2010 from a moral perspective, supporters on both sides of the political divide would yell at each other until the end of days, and nothing would get solved.

Between fickleness and an insane nation

News, Voranai Vanijaka, Published on 09/12/2012

» Tomorrow is Constitution Day, but with 17 charters since 1932, we can call Dec 10 the day when Thailand celebrates 80 years of fickleness. Charter changes to accommodate the times are one thing; 17 constitutions and counting in 80 years is an entirely different matter.

OPINION

Dear protesters, stop cramping my lifestyle

Voranai Vanijaka, Published on 01/11/2012

» People love to masturbate over the righteousness of their cause, but turn a blind eye to, and make a laundry list of excuses for, the abuses that pave their glorious path.

Let's keep it real in the rice field

News, Voranai Vanijaka, Published on 07/10/2012

» Some 260 billion baht has already been spent on subsidising rice prices and another 405 billion baht will follow for the next farming season. If one were to view the rice pledging scheme from an economic perspective, surely one would see that it is full of holes. If one were to assume that the intention of the scheme is to better the lives of farmers, surely it's obvious that any benefits would be minimal and temporary. But if one were to look at the scheme from a realpolitik perspective, surely one would see its merits.

If there's a will, There's an affray

News, Voranai Vanijaka, Published on 30/09/2012

» There are a few things I've learned from the rumble in front of the Crime Suppression Division (CSD) compound between the yellow People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) and the red shirt United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) last Tuesday. One, as I already suspected, the red shirts have the upper hand. The Romans and the Americans created their hegemony through the three R's: resource, reinforcement and resolve. The red shirts have all three, while the yellow shirts have simply wilted.
