Strong deeds needed from new forest chief

News, Piyaporn Wongruang, Published on 30/12/2012

» The Seub Nakhasathien Foundation paints a grim picture of the state of the country's forests with its 2012 report, which estimates that in the last 50 years Thailand has lost 50% of its forest cover. The report says forests now account for only about one-third of the country's total area, or about 171,000 square kilometres and there are now only five provinces that have a forest cover of more than 70%. No wonder the foundation's secretary-general, Sasin Chaloemlap, says, ''We cannot afford to lose more forest and forest encroachment cannot be allowed and tolerated any more.''

Flexible electronics may bring sci-fi within reach

Life, James Hein, Published on 19/12/2012

» HP is still the biggest seller of PCs, but it's not much of a player in other computer markets such as the portable realm. In terms of total devices shipped, Samsung is now the market leader growing nearly 100% to take top spot with a solid 21.8% of the market. Apple is next on 15.1%. Lenovo is a surprising third at 7%, with HP now down to 4.6 from a previous 7.4%. HP doesn't have a smartphone and its tablet range is sparse so it makes it hard to compete in the smart-connected space. And things won't get much better since the pundits are expecting another 100% jump in smartphone and tablet sales, rising to an overall 70% share of the market. I'm not convinced, though, that tablet sales are going to increase all that much more in what may already be a saturated market; any new entrants will probably get in with the less expensive Chinese products.

The legal licence to kill

News, Voranai Vanijaka, Published on 16/12/2012

» If we were to view the charges against former prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and former national security chief Suthep Thaugsuban relating to the death of an innocent bystander during the political crisis of April and May 2010 from a moral perspective, supporters on both sides of the political divide would yell at each other until the end of days, and nothing would get solved.

The politics of the streets

News, Published on 24/11/2012

» By imposing the Internal Security Act ahead of today's planned rally by Pitak Siam, the government has shown that it takes this misguided political movement with its old-fashioned ideas far more seriously than many had realised. The obvious assumption is that the administration knows something that the rest of the country does not and has proof of wrongdoing or ill intent beyond the serious accusations it has already made. If that is the case and some sort of "insurrection" is planned under the guise of a rally, then arrests of suspects and a detailed public briefing are presumably imminent. Democracy does grant many rights but these do not include the right to cause chaos or instigate the violent overthrow of governments.

Be very afraid of Basel III

News, Published on 21/11/2012

» Who's afraid of Basel III? I am, and you should be too, because starting January 2013, tougher banking rules known as "Basel III" are expected to take effect. But why should we care? After all, Thailand is not a member of the Basel Committee, and aren't these rules supposed to have an impact on just banking operations anyway?
