In the face of danger

News, Postbag, Published on 07/03/2020

» Re: "Masking selfishness", (PostBag, March 5). I have read Yankee Doodle's letter with interest. Almost everything he says about the effectiveness of face masks against Covid-19 is true: face masks are not effective against the spread of coronavirus.

Educate voters

News, Postbag, Published on 17/01/2020

» I agree with PM Prayut Chan-o-cha that political party rallies are "a waste of time" (BP, Jan 15). Instead, parties should spend time debating on issues of the day and give equal opportunity to each participant. One of our key problems is that, at present, each party only speaks to its own supporters, promoting "silo thinking" in a self-reinforcing spiral. But, like American author Walter Lippmann said, "where all think alike, no one thinks very much".

Fuzzy Thai logic

News, Postbag, Published on 19/10/2019

» Historically, fear of communist regimes has been used by politicians to keep them alive, strive and win elections. In the USA, politicians always create a hostile enemy and introduce a powerful fear factor to get elected. For most of the last century, the USA treated China, the Soviet Union, Cuba and Sandinistas as a threat to democracy and the whole world. First, it was Soviets, later China, and in this new century, al-Qaeda and the Islamic State became the new threat. And now they have a new enemy -- immigrants from across the border from Mexico and South America. A whole generation of Americans grew up dreaming about communists taking away their freedom and democracy. Sadly, even today a big lobby of Cuban immigrants in Florida keeps those fears alive.

Army chief paranoid?

News, Postbag, Published on 28/09/2019

» Re: "Apirat says B12bn of US arms 'a necessity'", (BP, Sept 26). Every time I read the army's attempt to justify their need for more extremely violent weapons, I get the feeling that the main qualification necessary for the head of the army is that he needs to be extremely paranoid. Who does he think is going to attack us? The last attack on the army that I remember was some guy who rammed a tank with his taxi at or near the Royal Plaza. Is the army commander afraid that it will be a whole fleet of taxis next time?

Reopen the cases against him, and the judge has to be neutral … he has the right to a free and fair trial."
