Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 25/12/2020

» The year of 'Rona meant a lot of changes in the way we do things hence the term "new normal", and Geekdom wasn't left unscathed. However, that doesn't necessarily mean it was all bad. There are things we enjoyed watching this year with all the time we had on our hands and fan events that we "attended" right in the comfort of our own home that we wouldn't be able to normally attend. At the same time, there were some things that sadly suffered because of the pandemic and a certain something that fell flat despite all the hype. Here's the winners and losers of 2020 in geek.

However, is it truly a smartphone that's paving the way for a brand new generation of smartphones or is it simply a phone that's relying heavily on its uniqueness?

Warrior without honour

» There's no scarcity of hack-and-slash games around nor are stealth games lacking in the current video game landscape. The way these games work are formulaic, from the likes of button-mashing games like God Of War or something like the current iterations of Assassin's Creed that have reworked the combat system but still had that iconic stealth gameplay. Ghost Of Tsushima definitely borrows and relies on these formulas, but the result isn't another generic sword-fighting, open-world, sneak-around game. Instead, what we get is quite possibly the first Akira Kurosawa-like video game we've all been waiting for.

In fact, the game was so good that Neil Druckmann, the game's director, admitted that he was wary of making a sequel. Obviously, they figured out a way to continue the story and make another game that would hopefully satisfy players worldwide. But does it?

» Big games from well-known developers are great but there are other games that may sometimes be obscured by the looming shadows these games cast. Titles from indie developers or smaller yet fun games may pass the radar of most gamers, which is why we're putting the spotlight on these two titles this month: Dreams Universe from Media Molecule who's also responsible for the "LittleBigPlanet" series and Patapon 2 Remastered, a title originally made for the PlayStation Portable, which is now available for the PS4.

» This year's list of upcoming games to be excited for seems a little short but many of these titles look promising. Most are remakes or new entries into established franchises though one stands out as an original and may ironically be the game that all are excited for. I'm not complaining, I'm just glad to see games we can all be excited about. Start saving for these titles!
