The Berlin provocation -- small made to look very big

News, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 24/12/2016

» Twelve people were killed in a Christmas market in Berlin on Monday, mowed down by a terrorist in a big truck. Elsewhere in Germany, if it was an average day, another 10 people were killed in or by motor vehicles. They are all equally dead; the only difference is the motivation of the man in the truck.

Making the best of life in the flood lane

News, Sirinya Wattanasukchai, Published on 05/10/2016

» I am sure brake lights and wheels of cars -- be they Japanese, European or American -- are the latest hip art fad in Bangkok. In the past few weeks, my Facebook wall has been bombarded with photos of a flooded Bangkok with commuters stuck in paralysed traffic. Misuse of the courts

News, Editorial, Published on 15/06/2016

» The army group in charge of security in the deep South is taking a dangerous and misguided step in trying to punish critics in court. The Internal Security Operations Command (Isoc) has filed double-edged criminal suits against the heads of three NGOs for publishing a booklet last February, starkly called Torture, and clearly detailing 54 credible cases of alleged army mistreatment of detainees in the South. Isoc denies there was any torture, at any time, and claims it has been damaged by the printed cases.

New dynamics redefining global nuclear relations

News, Published on 30/01/2016

» The diplomatic harvest from last summer’s agreement on Iran’s nuclear programme has begun. When US Navy boats drifted into Iranian waters this month — a development that, even just a year ago, probably would have triggered a crisis — they were detained only briefly. In the same week, Iran also released five American prisoners; exported enriched uranium, in accordance with the nuclear deal; and re-entered world petroleum markets.

Why humans fight, both now and 10,000 years ago

Transgender Muslims find a home for prayer in Indonesia

News, Published on 24/12/2015

» As the call to prayer boomed over this mid-size university town on a recent Sunday night, rows of conservatively dressed Muslim women laid out their prayer mats, bowed toward Mecca and murmured prayers in Arabic. As dusk fell, it was a ritual being carried out in mosques and prayer academies across the city.
