The quest for a sustainable Songkran

» Water splashing never came with guilt, until recently. This is Songkran, and water is the currency that we once spent as if there were no tomorrow.

Saturday morning fever

Life, Anchalee Kongrut, Published on 17/02/2016

» Every Saturday, try the running workshop at Lumpini Park, a free activity that is gaining popularity. The general perception is that running workshops are for elite runners -- national team athletes with dreams of becoming Olympians. But that's not true. The Saturday outdoor running lab is run by Sathavorn Chanpongsri, a former national athlete who won a bronze medal for marathon at the Sea Games 1985, and a respected coach in the local running circle. To him, every runner should take a short introduction course on running, regardless of their level of experience.

Keep on running

Life, Anchalee Kongrut, Published on 19/11/2015

» I started calling myself a runner, albeit an amateur, on the third Sunday of November 2013, after I ran my first ever mini-marathon of 10km at the legendary Standard Chartered Bangkok Marathon (SCBM). For the local running community, the event is like a rite of passage, where novices participate in the "Fun Run" of 5km, while others do something more arduous, or even get a taste of the life-changing experience of a full 42K marathon. Many runners, including myself, have fond memories of the event because SCBM was their very first running competition. It is with one step that a person begin his or her relationship with the lonely, addictive and meditative-like act of running.

Time to look past the spin

Life, Anchalee Kongrut, Published on 04/03/2014

» I always love monitoring how politicians make use of media to distribute their messages or reinvent their image. But much more interesting is how people respond to these spins. In my humble opinion, people — voters — love politicians who can entertain them, a kind of man who can make them laugh, whom they can associate with. People seem to forget that these politicians are meant to serve, not to entertain, nor to bond with us.

When building fences beats taking offence

Life, Anchalee Kongrut, Published on 01/02/2013

» I'm no fan of apps nor of online games. Yet the news on Monday about the launch of Human Fence, an app created by Greenpeace Southeast Asia and the Tha Sala community in Nakhon Si Thammarat province, prompted me to download it to my Facebook page right away.

The art of getting drunk in the Middle Kingdom

Life, Anchalee Kongrut, Published on 28/09/2012

» I often wonder why Chinese banquets are hysterically cheerful, rather noisy, with guests constantly moving from one table to another, holding cups brimful with rice liquor known as bai jiu.

When all is run and won

Life, Anchalee Kongrut, Published on 09/08/2012

» Every party comes to an end. So too does the 2012 London Olympic Games, which arrives at its curtain call on Sunday. At the closing ceremony, all eyes will shift to Rio de Janeiro, the city that will take over the torch. Brazil is another BRIC countries _ a new emerging economy beside China, India and Russia _ that plays host to the Games. (Please stand up India, as I am totally convinced that a New Delhi or Mumbai Summer Olympics will shame London and Beijing.)
