Successes, failures and a finale

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 12/04/2017

» On May 2, Apple will announce its Second Quarter Results for 2017. The conference call is scheduled for 2pm Cupertino Time on Tuesday, which is around 4am Wednesday here. In the next couple of weeks we can expect a series of comments about how Apple will fail; and on how it should spend its cash on buying companies. Ignore these: Apple does its own thing and is usually right in the long run.

Saving lives with Apple HealthKit

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 31/08/2016

» Apple released an update to iOS (9.3.5) last week following the discovery of a weakness that could allow an attack to take over a device in certain circumstances. Update now.

Not just a pimped up iPad

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 02/12/2015

» Every time Apple releases a new product, some of the more excitable publications expect a magic bullet. Not even the iPhone was an instant success, with several commentators suggesting it would not sell and Apple would be doomed.

Picture perfect iPhones

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 25/11/2015

» I was told last weekend about an Apple replacement programme for the iPhone 6 Plus (not the latest 6s Plus). A small number of these iPhones have a component that may fail causing photos to look blurry. The lens floats in a magnetic field, allowing it (normally) to have a rapid auto-focus capability. There is speculation that this might be the root of this rare problem.

Contain yourself, the new iPhone is here

» Apple made a lot of money last quarter and is on for a record year. Those predicting lower sales in China were utterly wrong. Wall Street is ringing its hands because (they say) this sort of growth cannot be sustained and Apple will fail. I guess eventually, the Sun will stop shining too, but not yet. Predictions are usually pinned on share price and growth; but Apple's products, and profits, are better indicators.

Writing and integrating on Macs and iOS

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 20/05/2015

» With Apple's World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) only a couple of weeks away (June 8-12), the rumours have already begun. The top rumour was that Apple would produce a new rose gold colour for the next iPhone. Another rumour reported was how Homekit — Apple's unifying approach to the Internet of Things — is having problems and will be delayed until September.

News and commands from the future

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 28/01/2015

» With the announcement of Apple's Q1 2015 figures released just a few hours ago, I expect there are already several reports online explaining the numbers and telling us why Apple is succeeding. Or failing. It depends on whose words you read. One thing the negatives will suggest is that what goes up, must come down, so in the final analysis Apple will fail. Just not yet.

Preparations for the update to OS X 10.10, Yosemite

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 30/07/2014

» There was a small surprise last week when Apple released the public beta of OS X 10.10, Yosemite. Cupertino had announced this was to be in August, but testing appears to be going well. The public beta will produce feedback from more users, which should help improve OS X. However, there is no real expectation at the moment that the predicted mid-September release of Yosemite will be changed. This may not be at exactly the same time as the iOS 8 release apparently, even though some features need components of both to work.

Macs, strong but not invincible

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 25/06/2014

» Last week Apple moved the goalposts again, slightly, with the release of an entry-level iMac with a 21.5-inch display. While it shares many of the components and specifications of the current range, there are at least two major differences: the dual-core 1.4GHz processor, that runs slower than the other iMacs, and the LPDDR3 memory.
