What our corruption looks like

Guru, Sumati Sivasiamphai, Published on 01/02/2013

» Corruption this, corruption that! From the highest ranks of government to the lowest thugs on the streets, the "C" word is constantly cited as the reason our country will never flourish to its full potential. But don't look to the typical apathetic citizen for solutions, as a 2011 Abac poll found that 64.5 per cent of Thais find corruption acceptable if the government can make the country prosper. And even if you find this ethically degrading, I'm sure all these so-called morals go out the tinted window when you're in a situation where some purple or grey notes can easily get you out of a bind.

Get out of any problem the Girly Berry way!

Guru, Sumati Sivasiamphai, Published on 21/09/2012

» Before we get started, I wanted to pre-emptively apologise to my readers for the times I'll be forced to use the phrase "Girly Berry" in this article. What the heck is a "girly berry" anyway? Is it an effeminate fruit that gets laughed at by all the other crops because it likes to wear frilly dresses and make-up? A type of produce that's overly emotional? A berry that only goes to the bathroom with all its other berry-friends?

Slacking on the job

Guru, Sumati Sivasiamphai, Published on 14/09/2012

» I Boy, would I be embarrassed if I was an official at the Interior Ministry right now. The whole country has learned (well, those who follow the news anyway) that the ministry's staff basically spend all their work time on Facebook. So much so that Thailand's favourite words - "crackdown" and "ban" - have had to be thrown in to combat this scourge.

OPINION

Quick! Get reactionary! Protest! Boycott! Intimidate!

Guru, Sumati Sivasiamphai, Published on 01/06/2012

» It will never happen again. No one in Thailand will ever dare to state something different from the norm if they want to make it in this country. Our rote rhetoric will prevail and we can get back to focusing on the things we truly care about - food, karaoke and beating Friday traffic.

OPINION

Whose line is it anyway?

Guru, Sumati Sivasiamphai, Published on 16/03/2012

» If you printed out every complaint made about immigration services at Suvarnabhumi, you'd probably have enough paper to cover the airport a hundred times over. Common traveller grievances include ridiculously long lines, inadequate staffing, and, god forbid, officers who don't smile in the Land of Smiles.
