» I have no way of knowing whether international business leaders at Davos over the weekend bought the Thai prime minister's assurances that there will be no repeat of last year's flood crisis in Thailand. All I know is that my large and clunky treadmill machine still stands outside the house because water from last year's flooding is still lodged within its machinery, and I have no plans to clean it up and haul it back inside until I am confident there will be no more flooding.

» That Sirichai Maichum, the security officer at Suvarnabhumi Airport who got his ears smacked by a high-ranking customs official till an ear drum ruptured, is distraught and worried about his career and his own safety after the assault, should have been a big slap in the face of Thai society. It should have hurt badly. And something should have broken. Something should have changed.

» Do you know how many zeroes there are in 2 trillion? I don't. Intellectually, I can't immediately grasp how large such an amount of money is, being an ordinary citizen who subsists on some 50-baht meals most days.
