An oasis under threat

B Magazine, Suthon Sukphisit, Published on 28/02/2016

» Last week in this column I discussed Thailand’s system of managing tourism, one that is causing the degradation and destruction of many old communities and valuable historical sites. I suggested a number of reasons for this situation, some concerned with the tourists themselves, some with investors, some with the government offices that oversee tourism and some with an ongoing deterioration in the communities. This week I would like to look at what is happening in one riverside community in Chanthaburi, a very old one that is a new member among the ranks of the victims of Thailand’s destructive tourism policies and practices.

Colour me bad

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 25/02/2016

» John C. Jay draws you in like a magnet. Nothing short of being a marketing legend, the Chinese-American adman also comes across as a winsome person. When you hear him say that he's known to "stretch the boundaries of the brand, but not break it", he doesn't come across as bragging. Jay gives us the stretched out hand gesture equivalent too, to match his vibrant personality.

Creating a community of characters

Life, Sasiwimon Boonruang, Published on 22/07/2015

Elephant evolution

Life, Noel Maclean, Published on 02/12/2014

» Believe it or not, there are still some solvent Bangkokian fans of Thai food who've never been to Blue Elephant. That's the Thai restaurant and cooking school whose skin is that remarkably restored century-old mansion that stands sentinel in stark contrast to the sheer black-glass tower behind that is the headquarters of its landlord, the Thai-Chinese Chamber of Commerce, and a manicured lawn away from the equally incongruous stanchions of Surasak Skytrain station.

Not just a boys' game

Life, Karnjana Karnjanatawe, Published on 13/11/2014

» Her long hair is always simply tied in the back, and Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, 54, has never put thick make-up on her face. She walks quickly in her high-heeled shoes. She is punctual and skips lunch if it means she will be late to her next meeting.

The reels keep turning

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 05/09/2014

» The preservation of movies involves storing for posterity a popular form of entertainment, but perhaps more importantly this repository can also protect an invaluable body of knowledge and wisdom about the individuals and society from which these works emanated. It took this country a long time to realise that the conservation of film is a cultural duty, and that our audiovisual heritage is a museum of memories that plays a vital part in educating future generations about their collective past.
