NSC's purview ignores South

News, Published on 29/02/2012

» The government has taken the correct step in placing the head of the National Security Council (NSC) at the top of security operations. The announcement by Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung was unexpected for several reasons. But Wichean Potephosree is fully qualified to be the first chief of such a unified command. The former police chief has a solid background in intelligence work. His appointment to supervise threats by groups and individuals against Thailand effectively makes him the national anti-terrorism chief. But even with this positive step, huge gaps remain in national security.

» With November's election in the United States fast approaching, the Republican candidates seeking to challenge President Barack Obama claim that his policies have done nothing to support recovery from the recession that he inherited in January 2009.

Reforestation, or tree farms?

Veera Prateepchaikul, Published on 28/02/2012

» The government says it will heed His Majesty the King's advice on reforestation, but the three billion baht budget allocated to reforest seven million rai of land over five years is so small that it is questionable the project can be carried out effectively.

Get real about English

News, Published on 28/02/2012

» Re: "English drive doesn't cut the mustard" (BP, Life, Feb 27). The column really hit me. This is not the time to keep still, when other countries are preparing their children for the Asean Economic Community. Having attended English classes four times a week over a period of 12 years, almost means nothing when we try to help a lost tourist, because of our problem with communicating in English. I hope to see the next generation of Thais busy working in Thailand, not scattered around Asean without a job to do.

» Will he stay or will he go? The question regarding Tarit Pengdith's prospects in the state bureaucracy has popped up from time to time ever since the Pheu Thai Party took office last August. But that has never disturbed the man.

News, Atiya Achakulwisut, Published on 28/02/2012

» During his opening remarks at the 2012 Post Forum, Deputy Prime Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong said the question he has been asked most often these past several months has been: Will there be floods this year? From most of the ordinary people out there, however, the question I have heard most often has been: Where is the floodway?

Terror probe must carry on

News, Published on 28/02/2012

» The detention of three more Iranian citizens on Sunday is a stark reminder that the case of the Valentine's Day blasts still has a lot of loose ends. The police deserve far more support than they are getting from the government. Security forces must continue to pursue the details of this serious threat to national security. Trying to forget the explosions in this apparent terrorism case would open the country to far greater problems, than just a brief fear that tourists might stay away.

Neighbours to the west get closer

News, Published on 28/02/2012

» Myanmar's ongoing democratic and economic transition has created an unprecedented opportunity for India and Thailand to cooperate and strengthen economic links between South and Southeast Asia. It was therefore no coincidence that the Indian government invited Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to be the chief guest at the country's annual Republic Day parade on Jan 26. Even more symbolic was that the premier's visit to New Delhi overlapped with that of Myanmar Foreign Minister Wanna Maung Lwin, who came to discuss progress on economic and security relations and extended an invitation to India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to visit his country.
