Correcting impressions, Apple news and a backup alternative

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 01/02/2017

» I bumped into one of my former students one evening last week travelling home on the BTS. As a computer engineer he is interested in technology and asked me about the AirPods. I took them out to chat. He told me that he had heard that they fell out easily. Not true, I said. Not once, even riding on the back of motorcycles through the Thon Buri sois has this happened.

Anticipating updates at WWDC; expanding the usefulness of photos

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 01/06/2016

» Apple rumours are sprouting like daisies in the approach to WWDC: just a couple of weeks away. There may be one, or two, or three iPhone sizes, with one or two cameras. There is also sure to be a new screen type (we are told). The next iPhone, which will probably be announced then, should have the next A-series chip: the A10. This is the one that many predict could power a desktop class computer.

Apple of our eye

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 29/07/2015

» I have had guests at my home all week and it has been something of a mini-Apple event. I bought iPads for the two friends who already had an iPad mini each. I gave them the latest iPad mini 3. With these we had over a dozen devices together and I could not resist a photograph that included a MacBook, MacBook Pro 13-inch (2012), MacBook Pro 13-inch (2010), two x iPad mini 2, 2 x iPad mini 3, iPad Air 2, 2 x iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and an Airport Extreme router under the table. There was also an Apple TV behind me.

Drive speed and connections with iDevices

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 25/03/2015

» I have been quite happy with the 13-inch MacBook Pro I bought about 18 months ago. With its i5 processor, I had expected lower performance compared to my 15-inch MacBook Pro that had the i7 processor, but the 16GB RAM and Solid State Drive (SSD) made up for that — it was faster in use.

New year, new predictions

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 07/01/2015

» It is another new year and I expect there will be many new Mac and iPad and iPhone owners. It is also prediction time again. I do not join this game, nor the one in which Apple is told what it must do. Note that after insisting on a larger iPhone (there are two now of course) some say that Cupertino must produce a smaller one, with a 4-inch screen.

My sexy 6 is finally here

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 05/11/2014

» For several days late last month, there was a tantalising page on the Apple Online Store for Thailand. Users could select the iPhone 6 model and colour of their choice, as well as the capacity, but the "buy" button was stubbornly greyed out. Until Friday.

If you need to get iLife, don't do it by mail

Database, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 10/11/2010

» I thought I had been smart by ordering iLife online as there were no copies in the shops, but I watched the online tracking as it remained at the airport for several days: Clearance delay. I checked with DHL on Thursday and was told that this was due to Customs. I think she meant with a large "C". I made a final check on Friday evening. I look forward to Apple's online software facility and downloading directly: no disks; no frustrating waits.

Up and running again, thanks to backups and a new machine

Database, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 22/09/2010

» Last Monday, for the second time this year, I un-boxed a new MacBook Pro: this time the basic 13". This will be a stand-in for my 15" MacBook Pro that is currently in dry dock.

A question of backing up data

Database, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 17/02/2010

» I usually write the eXtensions column on a Sunday. Before starting this week's offering, I restarted my MacBook Pro. Again. The replacement computer is on order, but as I want a larger hard disk than standard, there is a waiting period. Ordering directly from Apple's online shop takes a week, but I prefer to support local businesses, who have invested into building the market here over the last few years. I am prepared for the delay.
