When the president said 'sock it to me'

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 04/08/2019

» My apologies for unwittingly being the purveyor of fake news in last week's column, mistakenly crediting Goldie Hawn with the "sock it to me" catchphrase from the Laugh-In show. It was actually the English actress Judy Carne who was the regular "sock it to me" girl, although Hawn did also come out with the expression on occasions.

How tech can 'disrupt' our classrooms

News, Published on 11/07/2019

» Thailand's higher education of today consists of five overwhelming rounds of the Thai University Central Admissions System (TCAS) and 200,000 vacant seats in universities nationwide. This is clearly a shocking oversupply.

News, Thitinan Pongsudhirak, Published on 14/06/2019

» Almost three months after the March 24 poll, Thailand has barely managed to come up with a new government leader, who remains Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha, but a cabinet has still yet to be announced owing to haggling and bargaining over portfolios.

Lazing on a stormy Sunday afternoon

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 09/06/2019

» Every now and again, I escape to the Northeast (Isan), more specifically the northernmost part of Chaiyaphum province, to relax, unwind, mellow out, chill out and hopefully not freak out. It is always a rewarding experience to shake off the madness of the Big Mango for a few days and settle into a pace of life that drifts between slow, very slow and practically dormant. That's something I can handle quite comfortably. In some ways it must resemble being transferred to an inactive post.

Facebook opens way to nightmare

News, Editorial, Published on 12/05/2019

» A palpable frisson of exultation and a sense of impending victory could be felt among those to the left of the political spectrum on Facebook last week when the social media titan, in all of Mark Zuckerberg's wisdom at the grand old age of 34, decided to ban certain accounts deemed as "dangerous".

Ukraine has nothing left to lose in latest vote

News, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 24/04/2019

» Ukraine has a new president, and he's a comedian! Oh, wait a minute, that's not such a big deal. Guatemala was the first country to elect a comedian as president: Jimmy Morales, back in 2015. Although Mr Morales turned sort of serious once he took office: he's a right-wing nationalist who supports the death penalty and opposes abortion. Whereas Volodymyr Zelensky hasn't turned.

What Thai youths do not know

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 08/04/2019

» It's no secret that a large number of new-generation Thais have poor attitudes toward their homeland. Scornful posts and non-constructive comments are rampant on the internet. The causes of their resentment are numerous: politics, traffic, laws, the economy, culture, social values, cost of living -- you name it.

Tackling the 'lone wolves'

News, Editorial, Published on 18/03/2019

» The worst massacre of innocents in eight years occurred in peaceful Christchurch on Friday. In a 36-minute orgy in two separate mosques, 50 people were shot dead. A definitely demented but functioning man created an unwatchable Facebook video as he killed from close range. Heroes emerged from the mosque mats and in police ranks, but the worst of the killer's work was done.
