Visa recognises Thaksin's real role

News, Published on 29/04/2012

» Regarding the story in yesterday's Bangkok Post, "Thaksin seen as a victim, lawyer says", I beg to differ. Any country granting a visa to Thaksin Shinawatra is purely being pragmatic and diplomatic, because he is now Thailand's de facto prime minister.

How a ghost dictates North Korea's present and future

News, Published on 24/04/2012

» At 7.39am on April 13, North Korea fired a missile (which it called a satellite launch) in the face of opposition from almost the entire international community. In a perverse way, the wider world got its way, because the rocket exploded a minute after takeoff, its debris falling harmlessly into the sea.

News, Published on 24/04/2012

» The Association of South East Asian Nations is known not only for its huge economic clout but also for its cultural diversity. This is considered an asset in today's globalised and pluralistic world, where diversity is seen as a source of strength. Or is it?

Quake action not so perfect

News, Published on 23/04/2012

» Give some credit to Deputy Prime Minister Yongyuth Wichaidit for trying to stamp out earthquake warning hysteria. Mr Yongyuth chose exactly the right subject after he was called to fill in for the travelling prime minister on the Yingluck Government Meets the People weekly TV show. He may have slipped in a little exaggeration in his comments to the country. But he also made some common-sense headway against the fantastic earthquake and tsunami rumours of the past 10 days.

Rising to the challenge

News, Published on 20/04/2012

» One of the big selling points of Phuket is that it is never dull. That aspect of the tourist destination's popularity got a boost over the Songkran holiday period in ways the resort island's promoters had never intended. We can have our fruit, and eat it, too

News, Somporn Thapanachai, Published on 11/04/2012

» I spent the holidays visiting a friend growing fruit in Chanthaburi and I was amazed when he told me that he had just sold mangosteen at his orchard for 100 baht a kilogramme, a high price for consumers to spend on the so-called queen of fruit.

Delving into a grey area

News, Published on 07/04/2012

» When it comes to demonstrating loyalty at the ballot box, senior citizens are in a class of their own. Politicians know this, just as they know what time of year it is; setting the scene nicely for the elderly to receive gracious compliments and a reaffirmation of populist policies benefiting them in coming days. Added impetus will come from the World Health Organisation, which is devoting its annual World Health Day today to promoting healthy ageing, and from activities marking our own National Day of Ageing at Songkran.

Who have emerged as the real by-election winners?

News, Aung Zaw, Published on 07/04/2012

» The victory of the main opposition National League for Democracy Party led by Aung San Suu Kyi should not come as a surprise despite some irregularities and the initial fear that the poll would not be free and fair.
