China expands grip on wind energy

News, Ron Bousso, Published on 30/10/2025

» European governments seeking to expand offshore wind power are increasingly wary of Chinese companies' involvement. Countering China's dominance will be time-consuming and expensive, but political pressure and national security concerns may give the region little choice.

Protests of both despair and conflict in Gaza

Oped, Slavoj Žižek, Published on 30/05/2024

» These are crazy times. Biblical disturbances in nature, such as the repeated torrential rain in Dubai or the mass fish die-off in Vietnam's overheated reservoir, seem to mirror our overheated politics and social environment.

Must media democratisation be bad for us?

News, Carsten Brosda, Published on 29/04/2024

» Sometimes, the fulfilment of a promise feels like punishment. When the radio was invented more than 100 years ago, the German playwright Bertolt Brecht observed that its full potential could be explored only after it had become a communication tool, rather than merely a distribution channel. Doubtful delights of standing in line

Roger Crutchley, Published on 03/03/2024

» It is encouraging to learn that the Prime Minister is concerned about large queues at Suvarnabhumi airport, particularly at the arrivals area. Thailand, EU deal in sustainability

News, Bernd Lange, Published on 18/12/2023

» In a pivotal shift, the European Union and Thailand have reignited Free Trade Agreement negotiations this March, ending a nine-year interval. Initially launched in 2013 after the halt of the Asean-EU region-to-region trade agreement, the announcement of the relaunch of Thailand-EU negotiations, set against Thailand's evolving political landscape, presents a unique opportunity for both regions. As Chair of the European Parliament's Committee on International Trade, I am privileged to lead a delegation to Thailand to engage directly with key stakeholders to sculpt a trade deal that addresses our shared challenges.

Shaking off the laundromat blues

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 26/03/2023

» In last week's item concerning boutiques I wondered whether their influence could extend as far as the world of laundromats. My thanks to reader Jenifer Divine in Hamburg for informing me that in the German city's St Pauli district there is a laundromat dedicated to Jimi Hendrix which just about gives it boutique status.

Thai-style diplomacy?

Oped, Postbag, Published on 08/01/2022

Bangkok air is no choking matter at all

News, Sirinya Wattanasukchai, Published on 22/12/2018

» It's the time of the year when I, along with several other million people in Bangkok, have been waiting for -- lower temperatures comfortable enough for us to stay outdoors without breaking a sweat.
