» I recently watched Netflix's Death Note adaptation, officially released last Friday on the streaming site. Based on a famous Japanese manga series, the film revolves around a young man's twisted crusade for justice after having received a special notebook -- the titular death note -- that has the power to kill anyone whose name has been written in it, provided the writer knows their face. Fed up with the many injustices in the world, the young man -- named Light -- uses the note to kill bullies, criminals and even corrupt officials from around the world under the alter-ego Kira, earning a cult-like following from those who agree with his extreme brand of justice.

» Like all soap addicts, I caught glimpses of the debut episode of the television series Love Missions last week. Not a strand of hair misplaced despite his dangerous expedition, Capt Purich (played by Sukollawat Kanarot) enters a red zone to battle terrorists after they've abducted foreign delegates from a conference in Bangkok. "This act of terrorism has a big boss behind it," intones the captain.

» Recap: Global stock markets moved cautiously last week as investors awaited the US Federal Reserve's policy rate decision this week. Falling oil prices amid concern over rising supply from the US and Nigeria also exacerbated market sentiment. The Thai stock market moved in a very tight range on a dearth of positive factors.

» Recap: Global equity markets retreated last week as a slump in crude prices triggered a sell-off in energy stocks after an Opec-led decision to extend output cuts fell short of expectations. However, markets rallied on Friday amid a consensus that the sell-off had been an overreaction. The energy-heavy Thai stock market started the week strongly in anticipation of good news from Opec, and offshore fund inflows helped to limit losses later.

» It can be hard to make it as a musician nowadays. For many, success doesn’t come without a struggle. At a time when music sales are down, the only way for most bands to make money is by touring. So getting financial support from music labels is extremely important.

» Recap: Investors were treading cautiously ahead of last week's US Federal Reserve meeting when the US central bank raised its benchmark interest rate as expected, but their appetite improved after Chair Janet Yellen's comments suggested a more gradual pace of monetary tightening this year. The Thai stock market joined the global rally as the wild swings in trade of Group Lease (GL) eased.

» The Australian embassy in Thailand sits on Sathon Road behind a tall white fence, a mustard-gold building elevated on stilts, lined with tiles made by a ceramicist in Chiang Mai. A lake twists around and under the embassy and a flat shrub, perfectly fashioned in the shape of Australia, lies out the front of the building. For decades, it has been one of the most recognisable works of architecture on the busy Bangkok road.
