Michael is the managing director of bangkokvanguards, a purpose-driven travel operator that raises awareness of Bangkok's unexplored communities.

555 Headlines

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 29/11/2019

» Looking at your newsfeed can give you a sense of doom and gloom these days. Venice faces its worst flood in 50 years. Koala becomes "functionally extinct" because of the (at the time of writing) ongoing bushfires in Australia. Another Thai factory was shut down and workers were laid off en masse. If you need a break from bad news like I do, you're in luck. Here are three funny headlines -- unintentionally or not -- to lift up your mood.

If yes, you're in luck, because this week I'll do my best to relieve the symptom through the art of meme-ing (hey, it takes a brain to make a point with only one picture and two lines, okay?).

Election Made Easy

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 22/03/2019

» The general election is this Sunday, baby! Aren't you stoked to be able to exercise your right to vote again after a five-year absence (or eight, if you take into consideration that the 2014 general election was deemed invalid by the Constitutional Court). Anywhoo, it can be overwhelming to digest all the information, campaign videos, memes, pictures of hot candidates and fake news that have flooded your Facebook newsfeed lately. Perhaps, it's best to judge our candidates based on their parties' policies and proposals, and Bangkok Poll on Sunday revealed that 97% of respondents in their latest survey will vote on Mar 24 and more than half said party policies will be the first factor when deciding which candidates to vote for.

People Who Do Worse Jobs Than You

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 15/03/2019

» At the risk of sounding like a Debbie Downer (or should I say Sad Somchai), there may be days when we question whether we're doing well or enough at our jobs e.g. making a typo and struggling to write something relevant and fun on a weekly basis. And once that feeling takes over, you can console yourself by looking for people who're at worse at their jobs compared to you, automatically patting yourself on the back. The good news is that you don't have to look far -- and I've done that for you, dear reader. These examples should leave you thinking, "I'm not that bad."

Crossword Puzzle: Thai PM Candidates Edition

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 22/02/2019

» As the March 24 election nears, the number of opinion polls have increased. On Sunday, one poll in particular caught my eyes. Super Poll announced the result of a survey, which I unofficially translate to "The Public’s Concern During Election Season". What made this poll stand out is that when they asked people about their specs for PM candidates, they use cryptic descriptions such as "Man in his 50s. Former leader of this country with high position" and "Man in his 40s. Former exec. A political activist." Instead of simply using their actual names like other polls? They did that to avoid violating any election rules, perhaps.

Let's Judge Candidates by Their Posters

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 15/02/2019

» They say you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover but I say, “Let’s judge candidates in the upcoming elections by their posters”. Their posters are their opportunity to make first impressions with the public and you can’t avoid them on our already hard-to-navigate sidewalks, anyway. Here are some of the most memorable posters in the upcoming election that I spotted on the street and online.

I delved into past examples for some tips on how you can make your posters stand out from the crowd. You're welcome.
