Jane Goodall and the chimp wars

News, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 11/10/2025

» Jane Goodall died last week, still on the road at the age of 91 and still advocating for biodiversity in general and the welfare of chimpanzees in particular. She was a hero to me and millions of others for her courage, her wisdom and her compassion. She was also one of the greatest self-taught scientists in history.

The rise and fall of sociopathic leadership

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 11/02/2022

» Igenerally leave the psychohistory to Hari Seldon, but just this once I feel sufficiently motivated to venture into the field. » All the usual caveats apply: don't go out and celebrate, don't let your guard down, it's still going to be a long haul.

Donald Trump and the 'Yellow Peril'

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 06/05/2020

» It was completely predictable that Donald Trump would try to blame China for the fact that at least 30 million Americans are unemployed and that 70,000 Americans have already died of Covid-19. His polling numbers are down and the election is only seven months away. What else was he going to do? Blame himself?

Coronavirus response reveals China's fatal weakness

News, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 28/01/2020

» In an emergency, the good thing about a dictatorship is that it can respond very fast. The bad thing is that it won't respond at all until the dictator-in-chief says that it should. All the little dictators who flourish in this sort of system won't risk their positions by passing bad news up the line until the risk of being blamed for delay outweighs the risk of being blamed for the emergency in the first place.

Fear of being blunt clouds climate issue

News, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 13/10/2018

» They still haven't dropped the other shoe. The 'Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5 Celsius contains terrifying forecasts about what will happen when we reach an average global temperature one-and-a-half degrees Celsius higher than the pre-industrial average. (We are now at +1C.) But it still shies away from talking about the feedbacks, the refugees, and mass death.
