Somaliland: Mixed motivations

News, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 03/01/2026

» Last week Israel was the first country in the world to establish diplomatic relations with Somaliland. Not Somalia, a wreck of a country on the East African coast that has been mired in civil war for the past thirty-five years, but Somaliland, a different country just north of there that has been peaceful, relatively prosperous and even democratic for all those years.

OPINION

Where shall we put all the Palestinians?

News, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 07/06/2025

» Reckless people fling accusations of attempted genocide in Gaza at the Israeli coalition government and the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) every day, but the scale of the operation is not remotely big enough to justify that word.

Three hours in Greenland and plenty of bluster

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 02/04/2025

» 'We need to wake up from a failed, 40-year consensus that said we could ignore the encroachment of powerful countries as they expand their ambitions," said US Vice-President JD Vance during his brief visit to the US military base at Pituffik in northern Greenland. (It was brief because the Greenland authorities wouldn't let Mr Vance go anywhere else.)

OPINION

Lets hope Trump takes sensible Greenland path

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 06/02/2025

» The Strait of Malacca is strategically important. It's the shortest shipping route between the Far East and the Indian Ocean, the Middle East, Europe and Africa. It handles a quarter of all internationally traded goods, and if anybody tried to block it there would be a war.

Deportations and walls in the US and Europe

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 31/08/2024

» Fortress America and Festung Europa (Fortress Europe) are just starting to take shape; bare outlines of what they will have grown into ten years from now. But the trend is almost unstoppable, and it will be very ugly when it's finished.

OPINION

Did the West cause the war in Ukraine?

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 25/06/2024

» There is one thing almost all populist nationalists agree on: the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and the continuing carnage there was the fault of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (Nato). If Nato had not expanded to Russia's borders, it would all still be peace and love in Europe.

New space race to the Moon's South Pole

News, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 16/08/2023

» Don't say "Moon Race". Perish the thought! But there is a race to land on the Moon, and the Russians are cheating. Well, sort of cheating.

COP26: Mixed bag of hope, despair

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 12/11/2021

» It's not too early to assess the success or failure of COP26, the climate summit that began in Glasgow on Oct 31. The first week, while the heads of state are there, is when all the big promises are announced; the second week is devoted to haggling over the details of the deals. So we already know that it hasn't been an absolute failure.

OPINION

Do we need more rockets in the stratosphere?

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 27/08/2021

» If you're worried about your "carbon footprint" -- a concept foisted on the world in 2004 by British Petroleum to persuade people that their own behaviour, and not giant oil companies like BP, is causing the climate problem -- then you definitely should not sign up for a sub-orbital space flight. Besides, you probably can't afford it (US$250,000 -- about 8 million baht -- per person).

OPINION

Today it's Zuma, tomorrow it could be Trump

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 17/07/2021

» Sooner or later ex-president Donald Trump is bound to be indicted for some crime. It doesn't matter which -- it could be a fraud or corruption charge, or a sexual offence, or incitement to violence, or even just tax evasion. (That's what finally got American gangster Al Capone.) And it doesn't matter whether he's convicted, either; the real drama will come before that.
