Kingdom of Denmark vs the Shadow Fleet

News, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 25/10/2025

» Back in the 16th and 17th centuries, two-thirds of the Danish kingdom's income came from taxes paid by every ship passing through the Øresund ('The Sound') Strait, the only exit from the Baltic Sea. Did the West cause the war in Ukraine?

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 25/06/2024

» There is one thing almost all populist nationalists agree on: the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and the continuing carnage there was the fault of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (Nato). If Nato had not expanded to Russia's borders, it would all still be peace and love in Europe.

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 03/03/2021

» If Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the de facto ruler of Saudi Arabia, were a burglar, he wouldn't be George Clooney in Ocean's Eleven. He'd be a cartoon burglar in a carnival mask and a top with black-and-white horizontal stripes, carrying a sack labelled "SWAG".

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 05/02/2021

» China's Xinhua news agency tactfully described the Burmese army's seizure of power on Monday as a "cabinet reshuffle". This suggests a possible new approach for Donald Trump's legal team as he faces a second impeachment trial, but it won't work, for two reasons. One, Mr Trump's coup attempt failed. Two, people got killed.

Golan Heights show conquest still an option

News, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 27/03/2019

» When President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday affirming Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights, there was an outcry that went far beyond the Arab world. His action went against the international rule on the "inadmissibility of the acquisition of territory by force", we were told -- conquest, in less lawyerly language. Alas, that is just an ideal, not a hard-and-fast international law.

Welcome back to the Troubles?

News, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 15/03/2019

» The other Europeans are not laughing at the English for the most part. They are looking at them with pity and scorn. But also with a great deal of impatience.
