OPINION

Iran: Don't intervene there, Mr Trump

News, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 17/01/2026

» Any day now, the United States will "come to the rescue" of the protesters in the streets of Iran's cities and American bombers will unleash "hell" on the minions of the theocratic regime -- or not, as the case may be.

OPINION

Peace on Earth? Democracy everywhere?

News, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 29/12/2025

» Democracy is in retreat or at least on the defensive almost everywhere, while wars are getting bigger and more frequent. The trend lines are frighteningly bad.

OPINION

Iran: Drought, incompetence, revolution?

News, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 22/11/2025

» Twenty years of strict sanctions on Iran by both the United States and the United Nations did not bring down the regime of the ayatollahs. Half a dozen major waves of non-violent protest involving several thousand deaths have not brought it down either. Even last June's massive bombing campaign by Israel and the US did not bring it to heel.

OPINION

Too long in power a bad idea for leaders

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 01/07/2025

» Leading an entire country for a few years is a steep learning curve, but it's useful experience. Being in power for a dozen years makes most leaders arrogant and careless, but some remain more or less functional. Being in power for more than 30 years just makes you stupid. Consider Cambodia's Hun Sen and Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

OPINION

It's time to go geoengineering on climate issue

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 05/06/2025

» This is the second anniversary of the arrival of the emergency but practically nobody is mentioning it. Instead people are choosing to worry about more familiar problems like global trade wars, the rise of fascism and genocidal wars. It's kind of a global displacement activity: if we don't mention it, maybe it will go away.

OPINION

Has Iran finally reached the end of the line?

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 02/01/2025

» Six months ago, at the end of Iran's presidential election, I finished an article by speculating that the long-lived theocratic dictatorship in Iran may be a lot closer to its end than its beginning: "If you can plausibly say "This cannot go on forever", you are also saying "Some day this will come to an end'."

Why I yelled at the TV during Harris's speech

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 28/08/2024

» When you find yourself shouting at the TV, you know it's time to take a break. I reached that point last week, watching Kamala Harris's acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention, and what I yelled at the screen was, "The enemy is us!"

OPINION

Bangladesh, Venezuela and democracy

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 09/08/2024

» If all that mattered was economic growth, then prime minister Shaikh Hasina would still be in power. She ruled Bangladesh for 15 continuous years during which the country's income per capita more than tripled. Yet she has been overthrown by the very same students who stood to benefit most from her remarkable economic achievements.

OPINION

Fascism rising in France, but don't panic…

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 06/07/2024

» Nothing else in France looks like the 1930s, so why should fascism? There really is a fascist movement in France, although it avoids torch-lit marches and jackboots. It has even stopped the Holocaust denial (mostly).

OPINION

Israel, Hamas and the elusive ceasefire

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 07/05/2024

» Hamas did not need a ceasefire. It had already demonstrated that Israel could not eradicate it. It had achieved its primary goal of wrecking the anti-Iran alliance that was brewing between Israel and the major Arab Gulf states. And it doesn't care about how many Palestinians get killed; they are all "martyrs" for the cause.
