A lesson in geoengineering for grown-ups

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 18/12/2025

» A few days ago the European Union's Earth Observation programme, "Copernicus", made a special announcement at the end of its monthly report on the state of the climate. It said that the average global temperature for the past three years (2023-2025) has been 1.5 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial level. That's the level we were warned that we must never exceed.

Clear danger as war in Europe is in the air

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 10/06/2025

» 'There is a clear, present risk, particularly as Vladimir Putin does see himself as being at war with the West. The homeland is again (in peril)...Air and missile attacks will potentially cause civilian casualties (in the United Kingdom) in very large numbers." Therefore, concludes Gen Sir Richard Barrons, the UK needs to bring back air raid sirens and air raid drills.

Netanyahu and Biden: decisions, decisions

News, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 17/10/2024

» Two weeks ago Iran, in response to Israel's assassinations of the leaders of Hezbollah and Hamas, its most important allies in the Arab world, fired 181 ballistic missiles at Israel. A big and prompt Israeli counterattack was expected, but at the time of writing it has still not happened. Why not?

Israel-Hamas war can only be stopped by Biden

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 28/02/2024

» More than four months into the sixth Arab-Israeli War, with about 1,500 Israelis dead and 30,000 Palestinians dead, all the major local actors are stuck. Only the United States can stop the killing -- if it chooses to do so.

» Yesterday, the known death toll of Palestinians in Gaza since Oct 7 reached 20,000.

Predicting what Israel will do next is easy

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 08/07/2023

» The two-day Israeli military incursion into the Palestinian city of Jenin in the northern West Bank (12 Palestinians killed, one Israeli dead) seems at first glance like just another example of "mowing the lawn". That's what the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) call these periodic futile raids they make to kill some Palestinian fighters.

Israel pogroms reflect nation's shift to right

News, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 06/03/2023

» The dictionary definition of "pogrom" is "an organised massacre of a particular ethnic group, in particular that of Jewish people in Russia or eastern Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries." So, there is something deeply strange about hearing pogrom used in Hebrew to describe what some Jewish people are doing to Arabs in 21st-century Israel.

OPINION

War narrative a fable not fit for the times

News, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 09/05/2022

» We were talking recently about how clever the Ukrainians had been to call the invading Russian troops "Orcs" even before all the atrocities in the Russian-occupied towns around Kyiv came to light. Then Tina said: "If Putin's troops are Orcs, then he must be Sauron."

Biden speaks some sense on Afghanistan

News, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 19/04/2021

» 'If they go, we'll all have to go. That's the reality of it," said a British source about President Joe Biden's announcement that the last American troops will be out of Afghanistan by Sept 11, the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington. (What can possibly have possessed him to choose that date?)

Faint hope of war petering out in Yemen

News, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 06/12/2019

» Some wars end in victory, but just as many sputter out in exhaustion. The war in Yemen, now coming up on five years old, always looked likely to end up in the second category, and the time may be quite soon.
