Kingdom of Denmark vs the Shadow Fleet

News, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 25/10/2025

» Back in the 16th and 17th centuries, two-thirds of the Danish kingdom's income came from taxes paid by every ship passing through the Øresund ('The Sound') Strait, the only exit from the Baltic Sea. Each ship had to declare its cargo -- and if the Danes thought they were undervaluing it, Denmark had the right to buy it at the declared price.

Farewell Nato: The late, great military alliance

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 05/03/2025

» The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (Nato) retired to its sickbed as soon as Donald Trump won the presidential election last November. Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 01/03/2023

Unfortunately, the change of pace comes too late to save us from an acute global climate emergency.

Apocalypse may be just around the corner

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 17/09/2022

» Which would be worse: a global nuclear war with all buttons pressed, or real, self-conscious artificial intelligence that goes rogue? You know, the central theme of the Terminator movies.

Climate change salvation in a vat

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 09/12/2020

» We are putting a final end to the fossil era," said Denmark's climate minister, Dan Jorgensen, last week. What he meant was that the European Union's biggest oil and gas producer is officially getting out of the petrochemical business after 80 years.

OPINION

Donald Trump and the 'Yellow Peril'

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 06/05/2020

» It was completely predictable that Donald Trump would try to blame China for the fact that at least 30 million Americans are unemployed and that 70,000 Americans have already died of Covid-19. His polling numbers are down and the election is only seven months away. What else was he going to do? Blame himself?

OPINION

A summit win, or mere status quo?

News, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 14/06/2018

» If the Singapore meeting between Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un had been a zero-sum game, then Trump definitely lost. But maybe it wasn't.
