Who is next for the United States?

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 12/01/2026

» The Crazy Gang are high on the "brilliant success" of their Venezuela caper and looking for new targets. Like Alexander the Great, US President Donald Trump weeps because there are no more worlds to conquer. But wait! Actually, there are still lots of places to conquer.

OPINION

No place on earth is worse off than Sudan

News, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 25/11/2024

» There are wars in the world worse than those in Ukraine and Gaza. The war in Sudan is insanely cruel and stupid, but you hardly hear anything about it. Why not? Because, like me, other journalists hate writing about it and avoid doing so if they can.

OPINION

A small Slovak assassination bid; few hurt

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 21/05/2024

» Madeleine Albright, the former US Secretary of State, once called Slovakia "the black hole at the heart of Europe", which seems a harsh judgement on five million Slovaks. The assassination attempt on Prime Minister Robert Fico was alarming, but we can narrow the problem down to a more specific group of people.

OPINION

Is Najib Bukele the world's coolest dictator?

News, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 07/08/2023

» 'It's not perfect, but it's good. We've done something really good here," said El Salvador's vice-president, Felix Ulloa, defending the government's no-quarter war against the street gangs that have dominated the Central American republic for decades. President Nayib Bukele agrees, calling himself "the instrument of God".

The impact of Russia's latest war atrocities

News, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 11/04/2022

» Four years after the Soviet Army fought its way into Berlin in 1945, Moscow built a huge memorial in Treptower Park to the 80,000 Russian and other Soviet soldiers who died taking the city. (5,000 of them are actually buried in the park.) And Berliners instantly took to calling it the "Tomb of the Unknown Rapist".

Dismantling Africa, one nation at a time

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 04/11/2021

» Something is going wrong in Africa. Nigeria and Ethiopia, the two most populous countries on the continent, are both stumbling towards disintegration. There are now 54 sovereign African countries, which really ought to be enough, but in a few years there could be 60.

OPINION

Sept 11 didn't change the world forever

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 11/09/2021

» 'Changed the world forever' is the most hackneyed phrase in journalism, and if you can get through this week (the 20th anniversary of the Sept 11 attacks) without hearing it half a dozen times you'll be very lucky.

OPINION

Donald Trump the promise-keeper

News, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 19/02/2019

» Donald Trump is a man of his word, and he promised his "base" to build a wall on the US border with Mexico to stop an "invasion of gangs, invasion of drugs, invasion of people". It turns out that Mexico isn't willing to pay for it after all, but a promise is a promise. So he has declared a fake "national emergency" to get his hands on the money he needs.

OPINION

'Croc' makes Zimbabwe broke again

News, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 20/10/2018

» "Zimbabwe is open for business" was the slogan of President Emmerson Mnangagwa aka "The Crocodile" in the July election that was supposed to show a long and destructive reign of dictator Robert Mugabe, overthrown late last year, is now a thing of the past. The country has been getting steadily poorer for decades now, but this election would be the turning point.
