Dracula: more handsome than scary

Life, Kaona Pongpipat, Published on 25/02/2016

» Tickets for Dracula: Blood Is Life, Ewing Entertainment Worldwide's debut stage play in Thailand, start at 1,200 baht and we simply may never agree on whether the show is worth the price. What we will agree on, however, is that Chulachak "Hugo" Chakrabongse, starring as Count Dracula, is a good-looking man. Women love him and so do men, straight or gay.

Blue-blood gets a taste for your blood

» When Chulachak Chakrabongse speaks, he rarely looks your way. He could be drifting or struck by sheer boredom, but you are never offended. You're busy wondering what to make of his presence: as teen star that he once was, as a father of two, as great-great-grandson of King Rama V, as 34-year-old blues rock star "Hugo", who was with Jay-Z's Roc Nation label. Or now, in a rather unexpected turn of career path, as Count Dracula in a stage play production of Bram Stoker's classic.

Tars Gallery adds to Phra Khanong art vibe

Life, Kaona Pongpipat, Published on 16/12/2015

» Charoen Krung area has for some time now established itself as "the creative district", and no one can argue with that. Take "Galleries' Night" last month, when the entire neighbourhood was taken over by art, from NACC and Cloud near Hua Lamphong train terminus to Speedy Grandma, Soy Sauce Factory, Serindia Gallery and Atta Gallery at O.P. Garden and Bridge Art Space, near BTS Saphan Taksin.

Bangkok's long wait to appreciate the arts

Life, Kaona Pongpipat, Published on 18/06/2015

» Last week, I had a chance to visit a few museums in Paris. On the first Sunday of every month, admission to most museums in the city — The Louvre, Musée d'Orsay, Centre Pompidou, Musée Picasso, etc — is free. What struck me most was not Monet's water lily paintings rooms in Musée de l'Orangerie, Matisse's paper cut-outs room at Centre Pompidou, nor Mona Lisa's smile in that suffocatingly-touristy room in the Louvre. It was the long lines of crowds gathered in front of these places, from early in the morning, as if they were at pilgrimage sites or department stores offering 50% discounts.

» Last July, Toot Yung Art Center’s artistic director Myrtille Tibayrenc returned to her hometown in the South of France, accompanied by Thai artist Pakitsilp Varamissara. For Tibayrenc, the one-month trip was the first holiday she had had in three years. For Pakitsilp, it was an artist residency trip that resulted in a collection of oil paintings, sketches and watercolours for an ongoing exhibition “French Resonance”.

Chinn's up in the kitchen

Life, Kaona Pongpipat, Published on 03/06/2013

» Ask Bobby Chinn to introduce himself and the answer, fired off in a single breath, is: "I'm half-Egyptian, half-Chinese. Born in New Zealand. Educated in England. From San Francisco. Have been living in Vietnam for the last 18 years." A pause, then the punch: "Oh, and I was conceived in Thailand."
