The new gold

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 21/06/2019

» Ah, Bangkok -- the city of traffic, dangerous sidewalks, delicious street food, scammy taxi drivers and jumping-on-the-bandwagoners. Bangkokians love getting on the latest trend and craze, so when the salted egg phenomenon hit, it was only a matter of time before we were swimming with all things kai khem. Lo and behold, we are now living in the age of the salted egg. Everywhere you look, there seems to be a special salted egg dish or snack that you can try. If you're feeling overwhelmed, I get you. If you're wondering how the heck salted egg is a thing, I get you, too. I wasn't entirely sure myself. But in the spirit of top-notch investigative journalism that we are known for at Guru (wot?!), I decided to embark on a salty journey. For the sake of you, dear readers, and so that you don't have to gorge yourselves on everything salted egg, we present salted egg delicacies the city has to offer, with the real question answered: Yay, Nay or Meh.

» The Far Cry franchise is back with another story of deranged, violent lunatics having taken over an otherwise idyllic, beautiful location where you, the hero, are stuck and must lead the locals to freedom by shooting and blowing stuff up. It's the Far Cry formula, so is it just "same old, same old"?

Keepin' it gay, as in fun and carefree

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 17/08/2018

» Looking for a fun, gay time out in the city? Ken Kreangsak Leing is your guy. While he runs his own company Theoxeny PR Agency, representing various well-known restaurants and other hospitality businesses, he manages to find time for his other passion: the cheekily named G-Spot Entertainment. Specialising in gay parties which feature drag divas like Drag Race Thailand co-host Pangina Heals as well as several contestants from the show, G-Spot Entertainment has just celebrated its fourth year and shows no signs of stopping. Ken's parties are known for creative themes, shirtless hunks, killer drag performances and tonnes of fun. How did it all start? Ken tells Guru.

Welcome to the Mancave

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 13/04/2018

» As evidenced by its name and our headline, the inspiration for Caveman Base's design and concept is a mancave. No, not like the one in a basement that reeks of beer, a certain type of plant meant to be smoked and dirty laundry. Rather, it's the mancave of anyone's dreams: consoles, board games, beer in bottles or tap and an air hockey table. That's the whole concept of the place, but that doesn't mean ladies are forbidden (we're pretty sure there are more than a few females who can dish out a beating in Tekken better than any other dudes). In fact, the look and feel of the place invites everyone to pull up a chair, order some grub and drinks, and get rowdy over boardgames, a game of Mario Kart or maybe a few rounds of beer pong. And that's exactly what patrons of the almost five-month-old establishment have been doing. But aside from the fun and games, Caveman Base's menu caters to adrenaline-pumping appetite acquired after back-stabbing friends at UNO.

Fine (home) dining

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 15/09/2017

» There are people who like eating out at fancy restaurants helmed by Michelin-starred chefs and making it a special occasion. There are also people who prefer home-cooked meals and opt for simplicity over lavish dining. But who's to say you can't have both? Chef Pam Utharntharm is doing just that at The Table. It's not a conventional "restaurant" because she serves patrons at her home and cooks their meal in the comfort of her own kitchen. Guru talked to her about how she's bringing home-cooked Michelin quality food to Bangkokian foodies and helping them experience -- to use the words of the eternally wise Hannah Montana -- the best of both worlds.

LIFE

Same same but different

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 01/09/2017

» We really did think we saw the last of the Uncharted series. After all, the fourth one was entitled Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, so we were pretty much convinced that Nathan Drake's treasure-hunting days were done. Well, that is sort of true. Drake, the central character of the past four games, is absent in this standalone expansion entitled Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. But is that necessarily a bad thing? Is Uncharted no longer Uncharted simply because Nathan Drake isn't there? Or is the game able to stand for itself and be a valid addition to the Uncharted franchise?
