The afterlife of Mitr Chaibancha

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 06/10/2023

» In an abrupt moment of life's brutal script, Mitr Chaibancha fell to his death from a helicopter ladder on Oct 8, 1970. He was filming Insee Thong (Golden Eagle), playing an anti-communist masked hero, when he slipped from the rung and plunged to the ground in Pattaya. That same evening, his body was transported to Wat Kae Nang Loeng. Thousands of people, unable to believe that Thailand's most famous actor was really, tragically dead, amassed impromptu at the temple and demanded that his corpse be raised from the coffin and shown to the public.

» "Hurry up," shouted a crew member who climbed up onto a makeshift stage. Casting sidelong glances, performers, half-clad, looked in the mirror and concentrated on applying layers of make-up. Nearby, a motley bunch of musicians and technicians double-checked their instruments. A stream of chatter from a growing audience -- without any partition between the theatre and real life -- put unintended pressure on the band.

When doctors become ghosthunters

Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 04/06/2021

» There are many ways to frighten audiences in horror movies -- tense storytelling, a gripping narrative, or an eerie atmosphere. However, jump scares are usually a cheap trick to make the audience think they're scared, especially when the filmmaker tends to accompany it with a very loud and frightening sound without any build-up.

A passing fancy

Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 22/01/2021

» A dystopian near future warzone, robots and AI, Russian terrorists, action-packed firefights with tons of bullets and explosions. The story of a drone pilot who has to team up with an android officer in a top secret mission in order to save the world from a nuclear attack. Judging by its premise, the latest futuristic war film Outside The Wire seems to have all the ingredients good sci-fi action movies should have. And while it's setting the scene for what we can expect, that's not always necessarily a good thing as Outside The Wire feels like a middling effort with an ineffective gimmick and undercooked script.
