Curious vintage Thai ads

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 15/07/2022

» It's always fascinating to look back at print ads from yesteryears as they serve as a window into the past and what values and attitudes were acceptable back then. Even though I think you shouldn't judge work from the past with today's value (look up presentism), I'm going to do that anyway with some of the following vintage ads for your entertainment.

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 01/04/2022

» Although April Fools' Day isn't a Thai tradition, to begin with, every year businesses and brands have jumped on this good-natured humour bandwagon with their out-there ideas for products and services. And I must admit some of them are simply brilliant that I wish they were true. Here're a few memorable April Fools' Day jokes I wish they could just be real for your entertainment.

New Month, New Rules?

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 10/09/2021

» September 1 was the D-day for many to be let out of their homes for the first time in a long while (guilty!). It seems, at the time of going to print, another D-day unworthy of celebration will be October 1.

» You know it's summer when boob/moob sweat stains appear on your clothes when you go out for a quick lunch. You know it's summer when khao chae floods your newsfeed and 7-Eleven feels like a sanctuary from the sunlight. You also know the hottest time of the year has arrived when you smell the durian.

Before we go to the moon...

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 18/12/2020

» On Monday, Anek Laothamatas, the minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, revealed that, by the middle of next month, a plan to send a spacecraft into the moon's orbit in seven years from now will be announced. According to him, Thailand will be the fifth Asian country to achieve this extraterrestrial feat, following China, Japan, South Korea and India. Khun Anek added that taxpayers' money will be used to yield tangible results rather than just more research and teaching, at the launch of a project to crowdfund locally-made vaccines against Covid-19 led by Chulalongkorn University.

World Food Day

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 16/10/2020

» Today (October 16) is World Food Day. Don't feel bad that you don't know that it's a thing because I only learned about it last week. This international day is created in honour of the date of the founding of the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945. It's celebrated in many countries to raise awareness on important issues such as food hunger, food security, malnutrition and the impact of our food consumption on Mother Nature with different themes each year. To commemorate the day, I would like to suggest ways you can partake.

Uniquely Thai Logic

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 17/01/2020

» A school in Pathum Thani was recently exposed for having the controversial policy of gauging the loudness of students singing the national anthem. They were so serious about it that they divided the students into three categories, based on how loud they are: green, yellow and red. If a student is given green, then they pass. Yellow means they have to sing it twice. Red means they have to sing it thrice. WTF, you ask? This idea is supposed to measure how much students love Thailand. The louder they sing, the more patriotic they are. Simple logic. Of course, the school scrapped this unnecessary practice after receiving overwhelmingly negative feedback from the public. Simple logic, too.

» Looking at your newsfeed can give you a sense of doom and gloom these days. Venice faces its worst flood in 50 years. Koala becomes "functionally extinct" because of the (at the time of writing) ongoing bushfires in Australia. Another Thai factory was shut down and workers were laid off en masse. If you need a break from bad news like I do, you're in luck. Here are three funny headlines -- unintentionally or not -- to lift up your mood.

People Who Do Worse Jobs Than You

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 15/03/2019

» At the risk of sounding like a Debbie Downer (or should I say Sad Somchai), there may be days when we question whether we're doing well or enough at our jobs e.g. making a typo and struggling to write something relevant and fun on a weekly basis. And once that feeling takes over, you can console yourself by looking for people who're at worse at their jobs compared to you, automatically patting yourself on the back. The good news is that you don't have to look far -- and I've done that for you, dear reader. These examples should leave you thinking, "I'm not that bad."
