» One night in Khanom district of Nakhon Si Thammarat province, 15-year-old Thanawit Kerddam brought out his best in performing a southern folk tale before numerous viewers. He provided the voices to more than 10 nang talung shadow puppets, sang along with fast-paced southern music, and occasionally slipped in jokes and current events. Although the audience from Bangkok did not understand the southern dialect, they felt the characters' emotions as the shadow puppets danced behind the white-cloth screen.

» From Sept 14-23, the "Bun Sat Duan Sib And Red Cross" fair will be held at the Princess Mother Memorial Park (Thung Thalat) and in front of the provincial hall and Muang Nakhon Si Thammarat Municipal Office in Muang district, Nakhon Si Thammarat province. The fair has become an annual event since 1923.

» Last week, there was good and bad news about the environment. I learnt a lot about environmental protection measures during my June 6-7 visit to Japan's Yakushima Island, of which 20% of the total area is registered as a World Natural Heritage Site by Unesco. Later on June 9, I was happy to hear that various groups of people planted trees on some parts of deforested land in Nan and many other Thais planted trees elsewhere and also at home.

» As Bangkok will celebrate its 234th anniversary as the capital of Thailand on April 21 this year, the Bangkok Commemoration Museum is an interesting place for people to visit and learn more about this city besides palaces and temples. This private museum on Lat Phrao 43 is the brainchild of Jantakarn Khloisai, who has a keen interest in everything which marked the 100th, 150th and 200th anniversaries of Bangkok.

» It was about 130 years ago that Thai Buddhists of Mon descent started making use of the sala kan parian, or "preaching pavilion", at Wat Tha Kham in the Bangkok district of Bang Khunthian. Since the pavilion was situated right next to the canal it was the first structure in the temple compound people would encounter after disembarking from their boats.
