LIFE

In the dark places

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 09/11/2018

» It rains incessantly in Zhang Yimou's Shadow, a monochromatic palace-intrigue-and-martial-arts high rhapsody set in a perpetual monsoon. Everything is grey, brown, black and white, a solemn palette befitting a solemn story interspersed with a blur of sword-fighting where warriors wield blades and umbrellas as if they were painting calligraphy.

Look ahead after a grand      farewell

News, Kong Rithdee, Published on 28/10/2017

» The yarn of history has spun its fine threads. History is the majestic pageantry that took place on Thursday, the likes of which we'll never see again. It is the centuries-old chariots dripping with gold, the festooned processions and severe steps of solemn marchers, the sorrowful magnificence of the royal crematorium. History is the elegiac trumpet salute to the beloved King, the fabulous cosmology of heaven recreated on Earth, the stunning synchronicity of the masked dance performers, and finally, history is the invisible fire and the grey smoke in the night sky, signalling that everything must return to ashes.

LIFE

Golden oldies make it a night to remember

» It was an entirely delightful night of vintage cinema and deep nostalgia (sometimes very deep) last Thursday at Thailand Cultural Centre. Featuring 28 movie soundtracks sung by an illustrious parade of crooners, from an 83-year-old national artist to an indie rocker in tooth-achingly red pants, the concert Nang Thai Nai Siang Pleng, or "Thai Films In Music", hosted by Thai Film Archive, was a charming showcase that proved that the evocative power of cinema is never a complete experience without the songs that brought back a flood of yesteryear memories _ and something like forgotten happiness.
