Voice of an angel

Life, Onsiri Pravattiyagul, Published on 12/05/2015

» With blue streaks in her long, lush blonde hair, Jackie Evancho looks more like a typical 15-year-old trying to figure out a way through her teenage years than a global singing sensation.

Uploading the Korean dream

Life, Onsiri Pravattiyagul, Published on 27/03/2015

» Nathamon "Nutty" Kongjak was only seven minutes late, but she apologised profusely, to the point of mutual embarrassment. For a net idol with 3 million followers, and a budding artist who has just released an album in Korea, Power Of Nutty, there's something disarming about Nathamon, especially when the general consensus of net idols and K-pop stars tends to lean on the negative side.

» Sean Freeman understands Thailand. He might have not known it before he arrived here, but his "Absolute Siam" art installation feeds right into Thais' pervasive, photo-obsessed, colour-enthusiast psyche.

Wonderfruit bears more than music

Life, Onsiri Pravattiyagul, Published on 28/10/2014

» Thailand is never short of festivals, all year round. From EDM, nostalgic, broken heart to song for life festivals, we've become both immune and suspicious whenever the word "festival" comes up, as one often looks, feels and sounds like another. But Wonderfruit Festival, taking place from Dec 19-21 in Chon Buri, aims to change all that.

Lazarus, paper-bound

Life, Onsiri Pravattiyagul, Published on 29/09/2014

» For many years the notion that "print is dying" has been repeated over and over. Countless studies and articles detail how technology is robbing the world of its on-paper reading sources. But the advent of publishing house Salmon Books and its gradual rise in popularity has given print-lovers a glimpse of hope.

Clued in and caustic

» Showtika Somjid’s pseudonym was suggested by the names of a mentally disturbed couple, Nola and Nolee, who lived rough in her neighbourhood; they were familiar faces, often seen roaming the streets, but they never caused any harm to anybody. Showtika said she never meant to spark off speculation that there might be deep, philosophical reasons for her adoption of “Nolanolee”, the moniker she uses to sign the art she creates. She just thought it sounded like a “cute and friendly” tag and said she sometimes wonders what combination of events brought that pair of homeless people to that juncture in their lives.

Ice, ice Mickey

Life, Onsiri Pravattiyagul, Published on 08/04/2014

» All things Disney have dominated the psyche of children around the world ever since Mickey Mouse popped up in black and white. Little girls, especially, still dream of becoming Disney princesses despite finger-waving warnings and criticisms of gender stereotyping and not-so-subtly hidden chauvinistic values. As much as you try to shun your young ones from forming unrealistic ideas of relationships through these old-time cartoons and steer them, if they insist, toward newer Disney works like Toy Story or Frozen, the unexplainable need for fluffy romance seems to persist, even in grown women.

My cross to bear

Life, Onsiri Pravattiyagul, Published on 09/10/2013

» Last weekend, one of my best friends and his fashion brand-founding wife gave me a belated birthday present. It was an oversized, cross-shaped, glow-in-the-dark necklace decked out in hand-sculpted daisies and pearls, an item from his wife's latest collection. Even though it's cross-shaped, the necklace didn't strike me as having religious overtones as it has been stylishly manipulated into an amazingly well-crafted accessory. I love it so much that I wore it two nights in a row when I was out about town over the weekend.
