» The year of 'Rona meant a lot of changes in the way we do things hence the term "new normal", and Geekdom wasn't left unscathed. However, that doesn't necessarily mean it was all bad. There are things we enjoyed watching this year with all the time we had on our hands and fan events that we "attended" right in the comfort of our own home that we wouldn't be able to normally attend. At the same time, there were some things that sadly suffered because of the pandemic and a certain something that fell flat despite all the hype. Here's the winners and losers of 2020 in geek.

» Back in E3 2015, Final Fantasy VII Remake was announced and welcomed by all fanboys and fangirls of the original 1997 game all over the world. Almost five years later and after a very, very long and anxious wait, the game finally arrived, defying Covid delays and giving gamers yet another good reason to stay at home. Is it better than the original? Perhaps that's the wrong question to ask because it's an entirely different game, but fans of the original will definitely agree that Remake stays faithful to its equivalent and brings nostalgic fun along with a few new twists.

Its latest title, Black Ops IIII (yes, that's how it's stylised so don't give me grief) just came out last year, but the general consensus is that the game has lost its gritty realism and traded it for near sci-fi elements. Well, the developers have heard everyone's cries because with Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare, the game goes back to its roots.

Its latest installment, Breakpoint, transports you from its predecessor's drug cartel-run Wildlands to the lush jungles, sandy beaches and urban landscapes of the island of Auroa. » Whether you like it or not, geek is in. That's obvious from the plethora of superhero movies reigning at the box office and the TV series we follow and binge faithfully. And Bangkok isn't an exception. Geekiness is alive and well here in the Big Mango. That's pretty evident with the "letter" Major Cineplex released a few weeks ago that employees could use to give to their bosses to ask for the day off to watch Avengers: Infinity War (ours is already printed out and ready to go as well as our escape plan in case our boss chases us out of the office). Aside from that, Bangkok is going to show off its geek pride with a couple of events in the city. So ignite your lightsabers, produce 1.21 gigawatts, step into the Tardis, have your wands at the ready and sit in your captain's chair. » Ah, Bangkok -- the city where road laws are more like suggestions than laws, where the traffic is horrible, the air is polluted, where that Rolex you bought stops working the next day and where a "ping pong show" isn't a game of table tennis. There are many weird and sometimes downright horrifying things we experience living in Bangkok, like being stuck in a taxi with a perverted driver. But despite the many, many things we complain about, Bloomberg's Misery Index (which is a thing, you can Google it) has named Thailand "the least miserable country". In light of that, we've compiled a few reasons why we love living in Bangkok (we are aware we're focusing on Bangkok and not Thailand. We see you rushing to troll us, haters) to remind you to look at the brighter side and forget the fact that the elections are postponed again... Oops.
