Designing a better future

» Due to the rapid pace of Bangkok's urbanisation other neighbouring provinces, including Pathum Thani, have also grown. Two urban design projects focusing on Thanyaburi district in Pathum Thani are included in the exhibition "Transforming Thanyaburi: Creative & Innovative Urban Futures In Pathum Thani" on view at 6060 Arts Space. "Transforming Thanyaburi" was created by Thammasat University students from the Urban Design & Development International Programme (UDDI) at the Faculty of Architecture and Planning.

Doing his duty

» In May 2014, artist Surajate Tongchua was in a bank to pay his bills when the military launched a coup. The artist felt numb realising that the country would be ruled by a military dictatorship again, so he decided to collect receipts from that day to document the negative effect of the coup. He believed his payments for VAT at the rate of 7% were used to support the junta government. After collecting his and his family members' receipts for several years, Surajate started developing his art collection "Priceless" in 2017, which is on view at the new art gallery Manycuts Artspace Ari.

World of dreams

» Two artists, Pang Torsuwan and Atchalinee Kesornsook, have recurring dreams where they both go to restrooms and other people can see what they do there. Another artist, Onanong Kaewsomboon, aka Jang Onanong, dreamed that her friend visited her. The dream was so realistic and Jang was excited but she suddenly woke up and felt lost when she realised that her friend was not there. These cases were part of a discussion among the trio about dreams before they began working on their group exhibition "While You Were Sleeping" on view at Palette Art Space.

A disappearing river

» Artist Disorn Duangdao is one of the many people who has seen the Mekong River in Chiang Khong, Chiang Rai, change from muddy brown to an aquamarine colour. Although the blue river looks beautiful to tourists, it is actually a sign that the river is starving of vital sediment because dams in China are preventing it from flowing downstream. Another negative impact caused by the dam is that the river has dried up so much that the rocks in the bed can be seen for the first time.

A master printmaker

» Recognised for his print artwork inspired by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great, artist Kraisak Chirachaisakul felt lost after the passing of the monarch. However, despite feeling empty inside for two years, the artist became enthusiastic about creating art again when he met a Russian model, Anastasia Maslova, at an art gallery. Maslova became his muse for the 2020 exhibition "Venus Resurrection" at River City Bangkok and also his latest printmaking exhibition "Friends" at Kalwit Gallery. "Friends" displays 12 drypoint printmaking artworks and one oil painting inspired by Maslova and her friend Eve Parker.

The allure of beauty

» On the 2nd floor of Palette Artspace, 30 oil paintings as part of an exhibition titled "Her Wonder (No.2.5)" depict vivid images of pretty girls with short hair inspired by artist Suttikiret Wachdang's ideal women. Suttikiret Wachdang, better known as his pseudonym Mr Tontragoon, explained that this exhibition displays his works from two previous shows and one new painting.

However, after the lockdown was lifted, the country's art scene started to get a little more vibrant. Even Thailand's largest art festivals, Bangkok Art Biennale, returned.
