The best of Comic-Con 2017

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 04/08/2017

» Every year, the city of San Diego is the host to thousands upon thousands of geeks and nerds that converge for one reason and one reason only: the San Diego Comic-Con. Arguably the Con of all Cons, SDCC is nothing short of geek heaven and has become the place to make major announcements, whether it be movies or TV shows, that send the hallowed walls of Hall H trembling with the screams and squeals of fanboys and fangirls contained therein. This year's Comic-Con certainly didn't disappoint. Here's some of the biggest things that came out of SDCC 2017 and here's to hoping we have a Con that's at least half as good as SDCC here in Bangkok.

Thai references gone wrong

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 04/08/2017

» There's nothing like that feeling of pride when we see Thailand being mentioned somewhere in movies, sitcoms or games even. The Land of Smiles' big break would probably be the James Bond film, The Man With The Golden Gun. Aside from movies, Thai food has been getting a lot of recognition as well and it's always such a delight when we hear the gang from The Big Bang Theory mention that they're going to have Thai for dinner as they all gather around, sitting on the couch. While we are definitely pleased with the references being made to Thailand, there are some of them that are... well, wrong. We do realise these are all fictional, but we've compiled some of our favourites anyway for your entertainment.

Some like it hot

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 30/06/2017

» The setting: Upon entering Nineteens Up, you immediately realise that this is a place that's ripe for a good hangout sesh with your buddies. There's plenty to do, so take your pick: two billiard tables on the left and on the far right there are a selection of board games. Flat screens hang from the ceilings if watching a game is what you and your friends prefer. And last but finally not least is the bar, flanked by the Drinko drinking game made famous on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. The aesthetics and feel of the whole place gives a fun vibe. We think the colourful psychedelic mural on the wall adorned with wooden doors helps a lot with that. And don't be weirded out by the bathtub that's near the beer taps. At certain times, they actually fill that tub with alcohol. The fun isn't just indoors either. Nineteens Up has got some outdoor spaces for you to chill at, equipped with a ping pong and air hockey table, as well as an outdoor kitchen they're renting out.

There's an app for that!?

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 07/04/2017

» Our phones are our lives. We feel so lost when we're without them. We've also got apps on our phones that make life so much easier or, in the very least, give us some form of entertainment when we're bored. In fact, we may have a lot of useless apps on our phones right now -- apps that we don't really use but we're too attached to delete. And since we're Guru, we've got a list of apps that are basically just a waste of memory space yet are so quirky or hilarious that you need them on your phone.

The TT Diaries

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 10/02/2017

» Travelling over 3,000km in a car isn't that impressive. Travelling over 3,000km in an auto rickshaw, however, is something else entirely. This was exactly what the TT Ladies did. The three young women from Thailand — Bom Plengpanich, Aei Jinapuck and Helen Stettler — travelled to India to take part in The Rickshaw Run to raise awareness for domestic abuse in Thailand. The entire journey was filmed by the ladies themselves. The first two episodes are already online, with six more to be released. Guru was able to sit down with one of its members, Thai-Swiss Helen Stettler, to find out more about the experience.
