What's next on Netflix

» Netflix has taken over all of our lives and we've sat back and welcomed it. "Netflix and chill" is now meant in the literal sense rather than being used as a euphemism back in the day i.e. a year or so ago. With the recent boom of the streaming service, it's no surprise that they show no signs of stopping. Having released a huge amount of new content this year, they also announced exciting releases for 2019 at the "What's Next" event at Singapore recently, with series from Thailand, too.

» Us living in Bangkok may be accustomed to complaining about the various things we experience on a daily basis, whether it be heavy traffic, the absence of law-abiding drivers, taxi rejections or the crowded streets and trains. And while these grumblings are founded and you have the right to complain (because we do too), there are things that we should be proud of in the Big Mango and Thailand. As evidenced by this list, plenty of accolades have been lavished to Bangkok or Thailand, and sometimes we have to put aside our jadedness to realise that we're living in a pretty great place. Just recently, Bangkok was named one of the top destinations in the world by Mastercard and was also named "the least unhappy country" by the Bloomberg Misery Index. So this week, we've done what we thought was impossible: we're putting aside the snarkiness and sarcasm -- OK, maybe we're just lessening it a tad -- and listing the awards that have been bestowed upon Thailand. This is just so we learn to do what Eric Idle from Monty Python has been singing all these years: Always look on the bright side of life. That's wishful thinking though, we'll probably be back to our usual sarcastic selves in the next issue.

» Dhanut Tungsuwan is an up-and-coming artist who has had a number of exhibitions showing off his immense talent and work in Britain. A Harrow alum, he studied art and design at Central Saint Martins and Chelsea College of Art & Design. He's now back in Thailand where he recently opened a new exhibition entitled "Transitions" at Tadu Contemporary Art by Thaiyarnyon. Guru spoke to him about the exhibition, and his ideas and inspiration.

» Whenever you think of beach getaways, you probably think of places like Bali, Hawaii or if you've got the dough, the Caribbean or Maldives. Basically, anywhere but somewhere local. But why does going somewhere local have to be a bad thing? Is it because there's this mindset that just going local is not glamorous enough? Don't get me wrong, there's no problem with a beach getaway abroad, but it's only glam if you've got the bucks for it. I humbly suggest an alternative: why not just spend the same amount of money you would on an OK beach vacay in another country on a luxurious beach getaway in Phuket?

While he runs his own company Theoxeny PR Agency, representing various well-known restaurants and other hospitality businesses, he manages to find time for his other passion: the cheekily named G-Spot Entertainment. Specialising in gay parties which feature drag divas like Drag Race Thailand co-host Pangina Heals as well as several contestants from the show, G-Spot Entertainment has just celebrated its fourth year and shows no signs of stopping. » New hotels popping up around the city are a common sight in Bangkok. It's a delight to see that tourism isn't slowing down and that the city is being modernised more and more each day. The downside is that the essence and spirit of old Bangkok may be forgotten amid the urbanisation. However, there are a few who choose to not only preserve the old culture of the city, but also share it with people from out of town. » Whether you like it or not, geek is in. That's obvious from the plethora of superhero movies reigning at the box office and the TV series we follow and binge faithfully. And Bangkok isn't an exception. Geekiness is alive and well here in the Big Mango. That's pretty evident with the "letter" Major Cineplex released a few weeks ago that employees could use to give to their bosses to ask for the day off to watch Avengers: Infinity War (ours is already printed out and ready to go as well as our escape plan in case our boss chases us out of the office). Aside from that, Bangkok is going to show off its geek pride with a couple of events in the city. So ignite your lightsabers, produce 1.21 gigawatts, step into the Tardis, have your wands at the ready and sit in your captain's chair. Here are five events in Bangkok where geeks will thrive and fanboy/fangirl to the max.
All Roads Lead to Romain

» If you saw him walking down the street, you'd think he's your typical working farang living in the Big Mango. But Romain Guiot is a chef in a restaurant that he owns, the co-owner of an art gallery/tattoo shop/bar, and a distributor of a German spray paint product and he's only been living in Bangkok for four years. Not surprisingly, he studied French cuisine, fine arts and mechanical engineering to work on wind turbines back in Europe before deciding to travel around Southeast Asia and finally settling in Bangkok, where he also had a brief stint teaching yoga. He's cooking up new ventures so Guru caught up with him to talk about his restaurant, Outlaw Creative Cuisine, and Maison Close, the art gallery/tattoo shop/bar, and future projects.
