A screen for all seasons?

Business, Richard Mcleish, Published on 02/09/2012

» We will soon laugh at the old days when monitors and TVs were separate devices. LG is helping bring that day closer with some strong hybrid monitor releases. But the technology hasn't been perfected yet. TVs have traditionally lacked the brightness and resolution of monitors, particularly as they have become bigger. And monitors have lacked the onboard technology required to reprocess images, either properly (gaming) or at all (TV).

B Magazine, Richard Mcleish, Published on 20/05/2012

» As it is prone to do, HP has released many models in the printer market in an attempt to lure a wide range of consumers. This can be a daunting prospect for potential buyers, who can quickly become disillusioned by the overwhelming number of options on shelves.

ON display from all ANGLES

B Magazine, Richard Mcleish, Published on 08/04/2012

» The latest technology to come to the desktop monitor market is Super In-plane Switching (S-IPS). In-plane Switching (IPS) was developed by Hitachi more than 15 years ago to give LCD displays wider viewing angles, but had problems with motion and contrast ratios. But S-IPS has overcome these difficulties and is already used extensively in tablets and mobile phones. LG has brought S-IPS to its latest monitor range, offering a more useful feature than its 3D range last year. But the price of the Flatron IPS235V is strangely low. So is it all smoke and mirrors? Torch or Fireball?

B Magazine, Richard Mcleish, Published on 25/12/2011

» It's been a tough year for RIM. This week, it quashed rumours about a possible buyout by Amazon, but its fortunes in 2011 haven't turned around and the manufacturer finishes the year with the theft of 5,200 PlayBook tablets in the US. In an attempted resuscitation of its BlackBerry line, RIM has come back strongly with some tempting new releases sporting a new OS (see Brunch, Oct 9, for the Bold 9900 review), with the Torch 9860 being part of that batch.

» Setting up a home cinema for the price of a decent flat-screen TV was impossible until BenQ changed the game in 2009 when the company released the W1000, one of the first 1080p projectors priced for the mass market. Since then, there have been a string of rivals around the same price mark, most notably of late the popular Epson 8350 release of last year, which followed the success of its 8100 predecessor.

B Magazine, Richard Mcleish, Published on 05/06/2011

» The question on many a gadgeteer's lips at the moment is whether tablets will completely take over the portable computing market and wipe out their notebook rivals. But mega manufacturers such as HP have something to say on the issue. The US-based manufacturer has released its new ProBook series of netbooks that brags power, performance and portability, catering to the professional business market.

Staying in Touch

B Magazine, Richard Mcleish, Published on 16/05/2010

» Politics aside, the Thai smartphone market is still seeing red. RIM will desperately be trying to hold off Apple's resurgence in the next few months as its main competitor rolls out the much-anticipated new operating system for its iPhone, iPod touch and iPad - OS 4. The new BlackBerry Storm 2 is RIM's second attempt at an iPhone killer, after the widely acknowledged failure of the original Storm that attempted to cash in on the winning aspect of iPhones - their sensitive touchable screen. But is it up to the task?
