'Evening all', and other useful expressions

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 28/10/2012

» Thailand's tourist police will be speaking ''fluent'' English within six months, according to an official announcement last week. This is most encouraging news, although the six-month deadline is perhaps a trifle optimistic - I have been trying to master the English language for six decades and still haven't got the hang of it.

When recipes can turn into disasters

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 23/09/2012

» A reader's letter to the Bangkok Post last week pointed out that in a recipe for ''spicy lacquered chicken wings'' which appeared in this newspaper, there unfortunately failed to be any mention of chicken among the ingredients. Well, these things happen. However, I'm sure that the dish, which the headline writer neatly renamed ''Chicken surprise'', was delicious, even in the absence of anything remotely resembling bird parts.

OPINION

Forked tongues, or simply some little white lies?

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 02/09/2012

» Just about everyone has had their say on Finance Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong, who admitted to telling some ``porky pies'' concerning the projected export growth for the Kingdom.

OPINION

Time is still on their side ... just about

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 15/07/2012

» The most disturbing news of last week was the 50th anniversary of the Rolling Stones first-ever gig, at the Marquee club in London _ July 12, 1962 to be precise. Now, that makes me feel decidedly ancient.

Police help crooks - to jail

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 24/06/2012

» One of the more intriguing stories of the week makes you wonder about the thought processes of certain criminals. Two motorcyclists were cruising around Chon Buri when their bikes ran out of fuel on a fairly deserted road. For two hours they tried to flag down passing vehicles, to no avail. I mean, would you stop for two motorcyclists on a remote road?

OPINION

Exams a necessary evil, or pure humbug?

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 17/06/2012

» Most people would probably agree that taking exams is an unpleasant experience. There can be few things worse than that horrible sinking feeling when you look at the question paper and your mind goes totally blank. You know you are doomed.

OPINION

Keep your shirt on, please

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 22/04/2012

» Our thanks to Sgt Nop and the eagle-eyed boys in Ayutthaya's police force for livening up what had been a boring week by pouncing on a topless transvestite at the Songkran celebrations. Well, OK, they didn't exactly pounce, or even swoop.

OPINION

A fair (traffic) cop

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 05/02/2012

» One of the more encouraging news items of the week was the report that policewomen are now back on the streets of the Big Mango with the unenviable task of handling traffic duty. Eighteen ladies who used to provide security for VIPs and were known as the Sweet Troop will be taking their saccharine charms to the streets.

OPINION

It could all be pretty amazing again

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 01/01/2012

» I trust everyone is holding up well at the height of the funny hats and hangovers season. In a few days it will be back to grim reality _ hangovers without the hats. And I won't complain if I don't hear that ''happy new mia'' Thai joke for a while.
