OPINION

Full-body helmets

Guru, Sumati Sivasiamphai, Published on 09/01/2015

» If you've spent a lot of time in Bangkok, there are some sights that probably don't faze you anymore. Street vendors selling fried insects, ladyboys that are prettier than actual women, traffic jams stretching as far as the eye can see, people putting ice cubes in their beer/wine, multiple 7-Eleven stores in every soi, selfies being snapped in public restrooms…

15 wishes for 2015

» Well, Guru has somehow made it to our last issue of 2014. The year has been a blur of procrastinating by sleeping under our desks, copious amounts of vodka, and lots of grammatical mistakes – but hey, we hope you were mildly entertained and that your birds enjoyed having our pages line their cages.

Thailand versus the world

Guru, Sumati Sivasiamphai, Published on 16/05/2014

» Think of when you last complained about Thailand. Don’t worry, take your time, I’ll wait. After all, my life consists of being stuck in traffic/lingering impatiently for an incompetent worker to help me/rolling my eyes at the never-ending political drama/cursing because no cab will take me where I want to go when it’s raining/sobbing hysterically because all my pretty shoes are ruined courtesy of Bangkok’s sidewalks.

LIFE

The most slack-tastic time of year!

Guru, Sumati Sivasiamphai, Published on 07/12/2012

» We've finally made it to December, which means that the seizure-inducing lights have been strung up across the city, the festive outdoor events are taking place in full force, and there may be at least five cases of assault as a result of annoying Christmas music blaring in every department store.

OPINION

Bangkok's jaded you now

Guru, Sumati Sivasiamphai, Published on 20/07/2012

» A couple of Saturdays ago, I witnessed the craziest, most mind-boggling sight in Sukhumvit Soi 11. No, it wasn't that the chaotic hell that tries to pass itself off as a "street" had magically morphed into a serene oasis where pedestrians and cars can peacefully coexist. That would just be wishful thinking and will probably only happen when Thais decide they don't like rice anymore.

OPINION

Quick! Get reactionary! Protest! Boycott! Intimidate!

Guru, Sumati Sivasiamphai, Published on 01/06/2012

» It will never happen again. No one in Thailand will ever dare to state something different from the norm if they want to make it in this country. Our rote rhetoric will prevail and we can get back to focusing on the things we truly care about - food, karaoke and beating Friday traffic.
