Check his credentials

News, Postbag, Published on 14/09/2019

» Re: "Thamanat wins PM's backing", (BP, Sept 11). As a reformist, Prime Minister Pra-yut Chan-o-cha should quickly verify Deputy Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Capt Thamanat Prompow's claims that he didn't (a) plead guilty to charges of drug trafficking in Australia and (b) didn't serve a four-year jail sentence for his crime, thus disqualifying him from office.

Government lottery

News, Postbag, Published on 20/04/2019

» The current impasse with Thai politics in selecting a prime minister might never be resolved due to the problems with the rules as stipulated in the 2017 charter. Obviously, the rules were inadequate because there is no readily available solution.

The Pheu Thai circus

News, Postbag, Published on 05/08/2017

» How many times have Pheu Thai politicians shot themselves in the foot. I've lost count. This time they just shot themselves in the mouth, blaming the government for the floods in the Northeast (BP, July 31). Have they forgotten what they did in 2011?

Perils of police reform

News, Postbag, Published on 08/07/2017

» I'm glad that PM Prayut Chan-o-cha is reforming the police at long last, but he shouldn't reinvent the wheel. In 2006, then-prime minister Gen Surayud Chulanont, former army chief and member of our beloved King Rama IX's Privy Council, appointed retired Pol Gen Vasit Dejkunjorn, former chief of police, to head a distinguished commission for this very purpose.
