» It's that time of the year when newspaper columnists predict what's in store for the next 12 months. Hopefully it will be an improvement on last year. We have just about scraped through the Year of the Rabbit but I haven't got too much faith in what the Year of the Dragon has to offer. We cannot rule out another annus horribilis.

Don't judge these books by their titles

» It is generally agreed that a snappy title helps the sales of a book, although some can be a real turnoff. With this in mind, for 40 years the English literary magazine Bookseller, has been holding an annual award for the oddest book title. Also known as the Diagram Prize, last year's winner was the enthralling The Commuter Pig Keeper which just edged out the thought-provoking Nipples on My Knee.

Things that could have been better expressed

» While PostScript has over the years taken occasional liberties with “Tinglish” on signs, menus and the like, a sobering fact is that we native speakers of English have never mastered our own language. So we are hardly in a position to poke fun at others. As is quite evident each week, Crutch is still grappling with the basics and there are millions of British people doing the same every day.

» I hope we have all been enjoying the official “Happiness Week” in Bangkok and trust everyone is wallowing in contentment and experiencing nirvana, or at least a general sense of well-being, if not absolute bliss.

» I trust everyone is holding up well at the height of the funny hats and hangovers season. In a few days it will be back to grim reality _ hangovers without the hats. And I won't complain if I don't hear that ''happy new mia'' Thai joke for a while.
