10 Good Deeds You Can Do without (Almost) Killing a Turtle

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 10/03/2017

» A sea turtle, nicknamed Omsin (piggy bank), recently underwent a seven-hour surgery to remove 915 coins weighing about 5kg from her stomach. How did these coins find their way into Nong Omsin's stomach in the first place, I hear you ask? Well, apparently people dropped coins into the well this turtle lived in, believing they were "making merit" and would get lucky. This just shows how reckless people can be when it comes to what they perceive to be a "good deed". How on earth is practically feeding a turtle with indigestible pieces of metal considered to be a good or even sound action?

» Haven’t we all used Facebook to complain about something we see as wrong at some stage? There are some Facebook pages created and dedicated to raising awareness on improper behaviour in public places that you may not be aware of. Check them out in case you want to share your frustration, see what not to do so you won’t end up on one of these pages, or at least get a laugh out of them.

Swell Siam

» While Siam Wisdom is helmed by Chumphol Jangprai, the Thai Iron Chef on Iron Chef Thailand, he doesn’t take the cuisine down a strictly traditional path and it’s a very good thing. The new Thai restaurant, which opened on Apr 13, offers three set menus (B1,800++ each) for dinner – Ancient (time-honoured recipes), Classical (Thai favourites) and Innovative (with modern twists) — as well as a la carte dishes for lunch. A Thai house has been cleverly converted into the beautifully decorated restaurant. The empty space underneath the house (where family hens usually live) has been turned into a lounge bar with triangle pillows you can lean against as you recline on the plush couch like a Thai lord or lady. Besides paintings of Ramakien that adorn the area, the centerpiece is the bottom half of a big tree surrounded by orchids. The rest of the tree awaits upstairs where you can dine in a glasshouse while being serenaded by a live alto xylophone performance. Also on this floor are three elaborately decorated dining rooms. Suffice to say that the place looks very impressive. The patrons are Thais who arrive in personal cars while well-to-do families can be found here on weekends.
