A big farewell to a fine Thai journalist

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 09/10/2022

» It was sad to learn of the passing of former Bangkok Post colleague Anussorn Thavisin earlier this week at the age of 79. I had known Anussorn for 50 years and apart from him being a really nice chap with a lovely sense of humour, he was also an accomplished journalist widely admired by everyone in the profession.

Once upon a time there were no mobiles

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 21/08/2022

» The other day in a restaurant I watched some Thai youngsters who appeared much more interested in their smartphones than what they were eating. Their obvious phone skills made me quite envious but also just a little melancholy -- a reminder of how much things have changed since my early days, otherwise known as the Stone Age.

OPINION

It comes down to a matter of opinion

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 24/10/2021

» There was a thought-provoking letter to the Bangkok Post last week from "Ye Olde Bloviator" suggesting there should be a contest for the best letters of the year to PostBag, with assorted categories including "most boring" and so on. Not a bad idea really. If Edith Clampton (Mrs) was still contributing I'm convinced she would sweep every category.

Hot off the press on Ratchadamnoen Ave

» After last week's column regarding old seafaring expressions still in everyday use, I thought we could take a look at a few sayings that have their origins in newspapers.

Of lords, ladies and gentlemen

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 22/09/2019

» Congratulations are in order to former Bangkok Post journalist Natalie Bennett who has been made a House of Lords peer and is now named Baroness Bennett of Manor Castle. Natalie, or rather Lady Bennett, who had been the leader of the Green Party for several years, was given this title in former prime minister Theresa May's resignation honours list last week.

Why 1967 wasn't just about the Beatles

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 11/06/2017

» While writing about the 50th anniversary of Sgt Pepper a fortnight ago, it soon became apparent that 1967 was quite a remarkable year for a whole host of reasons aside from the Lonely Hearts Club Band. A quick glance at what was going on in 1967 might evoke a few memories among fellow wrinklies.

There's a time and a place to take a leak

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 12/02/2017

» A reader relates that he was in a branch of a home improvements store in Thailand recently inspecting toilets for a new bathroom extension. There were several rows of toilets and while he was strolling around, two young boys, aged about six or seven, came running down one of the aisles. No parents were in sight. The boys stopped, giggled, lifted up the lid of one of the toilet bowls and proceeded to pee in it, right in the middle of the store. Still giggling, they ran off.

OPINION

Well, somebody has to write the headlines

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 08/02/2015

» Last week’s column featuring memorable headlines prompted a number of readers to recall their personal favourites. It seems that everyone has a headline tucked away in their memory cells.

OPINION

Remembering the first tabloid strip queen

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 01/02/2015

» Following last week’s column concerning premature reports of the demise of The Sun’s Page 3 girls, it seems only fair to point out the noble deeds of an ageless beauty who appeared in a rival tabloid in a different era.

Taking a leak in Bangkok not such a strain these days
