OS X with limited facilities

» This week I am in Britain taking a vacation with my parents. The main problem for me has been the lack of internet. While my mother likes devices such as electric can openers, tooth brushes and carving knives, being online is unimportant. Her phone (which is off most of the time) is a good example of devices before smartphones existed.

Big Macs and size

» First, a correction. When discussing my stolen Mac two weeks ago, I called it a PowerMac. It was in fact a 12-inch G4 Powerbook. I had big Macs on the brain as I had been looking at Apple’s latest Mac Pro which has just arrived in Bangkok.

Back on track with my beautiful machine

» My 15" MacBook Pro was returned to me a week after its 13" junior arrived. I was told that the hard disk had been replaced. I turned it on and left it running for the rest of the week. With no freezes during that time, I took it home at the end of the week along with the 13" MacBook Pro and the LaCie hard disk that the Time Machine backups are on and set to work, first erasing the hard disk, then installing OS X from new.

iOS4 installation and Notes on the iPhone 4 release

» I had really been looking forward to the iPhone update, known as iOS4, since it was outlined by Apple. A number of features looked as if they would be useful. Some of these brought iPad tricks to the smaller devices. It was developed for the new iPhone 4, of course, and is optimised for that device. Fewer features are available for earlier iPhones. Those before the 3G (and early iPod touch devices) could not install the update at all.
